It’s pretty much guaranteed that every time I wear my Stranglers shirt, another middle aged bloke will come up for a chat. I spent twenty minutes last week talking with a chap about the Dave Greenfield synths on Black and White outside the post office. That solo on Nice ‘n’ Sleazy is an all time classic.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan - 'Your Community Hub'

Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan explores the wilful erosion of community-minded town planning in post-war Britain with moody kosmische synthesiser instrumentals on yet another stunning work.

Chapman-Fox’s high-concept electronic music has become increasingly politically pointed over the course of five albums, and 'Your Community Hub' serves as his meditation on the ‘state of things’. It’s a speechless form of contempt rather than a rallying call to arms, but sometimes that’s all it takes to highlight indignation. By far his darkest material to date, ‘Your Community Hub’ sounds futuristic but seldom utopic, often rhythm-centred yet only ever infrequently dance-able, and atmospheric but rarely purely ambient.
