A few years ago with a research genealogy in our family, we learned that 3 of our ancestors in the 1600's were tried & hung as witches in Hartford CT (75 years before the Salem witch trials).
Two were hung as witches because they were female & grew gardens, help birth the babies, were middle aged.
One was a man. He was spared.
They have documented proof that not a one was a witch. The insidious pathological gossip fear mongers of the time made up stories, then spread the lies about the two ~ one of those women had a clear witness to the crime she was accused of!
Gossip & lies do so much more damage when crowd sourced willingness to believe anything 'cause it's easier than learning the truth seems like a trend of the human condition.
The 1st time I shared this story a few years ago, 2 of my "friends" who were staunch religious folks (you know the one) started asking ME questions about witchcraft. I know ZERO about it.
I know about history. Psychology of the human condition. Life Coaching & Counseling. I took a class once on the religions of the world but one historical story was all it took for people I'd known for 10 years to say, "Well, you know all about witchcraft" before asking me questions.
Rhetoric & Social responsibility are important these days.
