Nightowls of all times, places, spaces, and ages-

Ben here!

I’ve been running this page since it’s creation in December of 2017, and have been working on Midnight in Kentucky, as a whole, for a while before that. In that time, one of my favorite aspects of this project is the feeling that it’s been obvious to everyone who has worked on, or with MIK, just how much of an inspiration to so many that the show became and has been- many of whom took that inspiration and are now following their own paths on these strange backroads. That ability to inspire, along with all of the experiences this show has allowed me to have, means so much more to me than I am able to put into words. With that being said, it is with a heavy heart but determined mind, that I have come to the conclusion- at least for the time being- of bringing MIK to a close. My other podcast, Ransom Letter Radio, will also be ending for the foreseeable future.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably read more than a few of my posts over the years, depending on how long you’ve been with us, and have hopefully enjoyed hearing my voice, as well as our cohosts’, on the many hours of the show we’ve produced in that time and before. First and foremost, I want to thank each and everyone of you all for that. Without every single one of you, this show would have never become what it did, and let me tell you, what it became was a surprise to me more than anyone.

When Stephen and I began this show I thought we may make ten to twenty episodes, get a handful of followers, and call it a day. Six years and more than fifty episodes later, Midnight in Kentucky has been responsible for some of the most profound experiences of my life- spiritually, mentally, and physically. This show has allowed me to partake in a side of existence that I may have never known was possible without its undertaking. It’s taken me from coast to coast in search of the unexplained. It allowed for me to have my first appearance on television and then gave me the opportunity to do it again a few more times. (Which I still deeply hope you guys get to see all of sometime in the future.) This show, perhaps more than any other project or work I have ever done, has changed me, and I can confidently say that the person writing this now is not at all the same person who hit record for the first episode, with Stephen sitting across from me, on my crappy broken laptop, in my parents basement in the winter of 2017.

Simply put, the voice that led me to the place to create MIK, and in extension RLP and RLR, is drawing me away from podcasting and on to some other pursuit. What that is remains to be seen, but I can’t help but believe it will be something that these years of experience of investigation and talking with witnesses, creatives, and researchers will deeply aid in the facilitation of.

To all the incredible guests, witnesses, and experiencers who have come on the show or spoken with me privately to share your work, your experiences, or your ideas- I can’t thank you enough. You have taught me so much and provided me with such fulfilling and substantial conversation that left me pondering what was said long after our recording sessions had ended. To all those who I’ve talked with about coming on the show, I would still ABSOLUTELY love to speak with you, or do a project of some kind together. Right now I’m not sure what that will look like, but I have faith that if I stay on this path and keep moving forward, time will present us with something and when it does, I can’t wait to be with and work with you all! It is with deepest apologies that MiK may not be the outlet for which that happens.

To every cohost who sat alongside me, questioning the nature of reality; to every patron who not only subscribed, but sent along a word of encouragement to the point you eventually became family; to every listener who heard what we’ve done and took it and began your own adventures; I see you, I appreciate you, and I am grateful for you. This is not the end. I don’t know what the next phase will look like, but this is not the end.

Depending on what happens from here, in six months, I may hit the record button on MIK once more. Or maybe a year… two years… five years… ten years… I’m not sure if I will, or when it will be, or if it may not become something completely new. Regardless, I exit now with nothing but absolute gratitude for this project, all of the life it’s allowed me to live, and most importantly, all the friends, family, and loved ones it’s allowed me to connect with more deeply.

I’m not sure which episode of MIK or RLR will be the last, or if perhaps that episode for each show has already aired, but I will keep all of you updated as decisions are made.

If the time comes in which I take up the mantle of Midnight in Kentucky once more- ‘Til the next moon rises, Nightowls…

If not- we’ll see y’all on the other side…

Thank you.

Happy (almost) Halloween, haints!👻👻
Here’s one for our 606 crowd!

We would also like to take a moment and thank everyone who has reached out with well wishes for Matt Sparks. For those unaware, he has been working on his dissertation in Israel for some time now, and, well, y’all have seen the news. He’s on safer soil now and we are breathing a bit easier.

More news on the publication should b be on the way in November! Until then, stay spooky!

🚨 NEW EPISODE ALERT!!🚨

It’s that time again Nightowls, when the veil between our world and what lies beyond is supposedly at its thinnest. But what of those for whom that membrane between life as we know it and whatever may lay outside of it, at anytime, may wane complete- allowing for a pure gaze into the abyss? Neurosurgeon and unlikely war hero Ryan Brenan, protagonist of Dr. Gary Simonds latest novel ‘Death’s Pale Flag’, is a man haunted by just such a view. When he begins to have experiences with the dead, Ryan’s life is upended, and he begins to question if he is loosing his mind, or if the dearly departed, who are seemingly reaching out to him, have chosen him for a reason. Tonight on MIK, we sit down for an in-depth conversation with Dr. Simonds on his latest work and just what inspired this tale of a man beset by paranormal apparitions. In this episode we talk hopeful agnosticism, the border line between science and the supernatural, what it means to peer through the veil of life and death, and so much more! Join us under the moonlight and by the fireside this evening, Nightowls, as we capture Death’s Pale Flag and go in conversation with Dr. Gary Simonds!

This photo was shared with us by a witness we spoke with at Cumberland Con earlier this month. According to the witness, the photo was taken at Roth’s Opera House in Cynthiana, Kentucky; an infamous spot for haunting and supernatural activity. The figure on the balcony was unseen until the photo was developed, and the witness was alone with a small group in the opera house at the time.

Happy Halloween, Nightowls!

🚨NEW EPISODE ALERT!!🚨

On the last Saturday of October, just as the veil between worlds is sheer enough to allow passage of all manner of otherworldly travelers, something special takes place in Meade County, Kentucky.

A celebration of the life and commemoration of the death of Leah Smock, The Battletown Witch, the only woman that history tells us was burned alive in America for the crime of Witchcraft- and it happened here- in The Bluegrass State.

In 2022, we were honored to speak at the inaugural Battletown Witch festival. Tonight, you’ll hear that presentation in full, as we discuss just a few instances of those and that which have been called Witches in and around Kentucky. Additionally, we take a few questions from the audience, and festival organizer Annie Hamilton Edmond tells us the story of Leah Smock- The Battletown Witch- and talks briefly on the UFOlogical history of the area.

While MIK were unable to attend the festival this year, we send our best to both organizers and and festival goers and can’t wait to join you again in 2024. For now, under the moonlight and by the fireside this evening, Midnight in Kentucky presents, Live from the 2022 Battletown Witch Festival: A Brief History of Kentucky Witches pt. 1.

Available now Ad-free at no cost on the MIK P@treon, or find us at our usual haunts on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Overcast, the Midnight in Kentucky website, the Ransom Letter Publishing YouTube, and wherever fine podcasts can be heard!

Jeez, what can we even say about Cumberland Con 2023 !? What an incredible event, full of incredible people, doing incredible things. It was a massive honor to be asked to emcee for the event, which allowed me the opportunity to speak with some of the coolest creatives in our community and paranormal investigators, researchers, and enthusiasts from all around the country. Deepest thanks to everyone who helped organize, not only the convention itself, but the pre and post parties, where we were able to reconnect with old friends and family and pull a few new faces into our weird little scene.

Thus concludes The Thinning of the Veil tour 2023. Considering we weren’t sure we were even gonna be able to hit the road this year, this tour has absolutely proven to be one of the strangest, most insightful, synchronistic outings we’ve taken thus far. We got to meet and speak to so many amazing people and we can’t wait to bring you a few of their stories in the upcoming months.

Running back and forth between the MIK table and the conference room Saturday, I wasn’t able to get a lot of photos, but even if I had, these would still be my favorite. Thank you all for coming out and making Cumberland Con the success it was and for doing the same for the entire tour. Thank you to everyone who made this possible! We appreciate you more than you know!

This is our final announced stop on The Thinning of the Veil 2023 tour and we couldn’t have asked for a better event to go out on. Fifty years ago tonight, something happened on the Pascagoula River that would forever alter the lives of Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker. We had the honor of speaking with Calvin way back in season one on just what happened to the duo that evening and his subsequent encounters with something or someone from the beyond. Loosing Calvin this past summer adds a bitter sweet poignancy to this episode which has always been one of my favorites since we recorded it. In commemoration of an incredible man and one of the foremost incidents in the history of UFOlogy, give this one a listen tonight if you can, Nightowls! 🦉

Deepest appreciation to The Commonwealth Journal Somerset, Ky., and the always phenomenal Chris Harris, for dedicating just a bit of this article on Pulaski County Walker Weekend & Zombie Walk to us and what we love to do- speaking with people about all their life experiences with all things they can’t explain. Again, we can’t express how much we appreciate everyone involved with the Zombie Walk and can’t wait to come back next year. Come see us on our last announced stop on this year’s Thinning of the Veil Tour- Cumberland Con 2023 ! Our local strange scene has never been weirder!

“Somerset has an amazing weird community anyway ... I could sit here and talk weird and scary and spooky all day,” said Foster, of Russell Springs. “It brings us all together. ... The part of this job that I love so much is talking to people about stuff that has happened in their lives. I don’t feel like there are a lot of opportunities, or have been, for people to talk about that stuff. There are people who have walked around with those stories for years who have never gotten to tell them.”

🦉

The thing about zombies is, they tend to gather in large numbers. And that was certainly the case this weekend in Eubank.

“Encounters with the unknown bind us together unlike any other aspect of the human experience. Speak with enough people on the subject for long enough and it quickly becomes obvious that almost everyone has, at some point in their life, been confronted by a strange circumstance that defies explanation. Be it sighting a mysterious light traversing the night sky, a crossing of paths with some anomalous creature, or simply a series of events that seem somewhat too convenient to be coincidence, those of us lucky, or unlucky, enough to have seen the briefest glimpse of that which transcends our current knowledge of the known universe are forever changed. Conservative and liberal, religious and secular, skeptic and believer, witnesses are bonded by their having come face to face with the ethereal and otherworldly and the questions raised and left to ponder long after the initial encounter has ended.”

Deepest appreciation to everyone who made our Pulaski County Walker Weekend & Zombie Walk as amazing as it was! We always love this event but this year was really something special! We got to visit with so many old and new friends alike, and heard some of the most interesting tales of the supernatural and high strangeness in our travels thus far. Special thanks goes to the Somerset Junior Woman's Club for always creating an incredible weekend full of events to celebrate the time of year when the veil is at its thinnest. Also to The Shine House for holding the always phenomenal Scary Stories & Other Tales event, the evening before the walk, where we got to give our presentation on ‘Human Unity Through the Unknown and OtherWorldly,’ (excerpt above) and Mitchell Stewart Teller, The Storyteller, brought down the house with his trademark brand of Appalachian Folk Horror.

The Thinning of the Veil Tour continues this Friday and Saturday as we and many, many other incredible artists, podcasters, vendors, and so much more, manifest in the corporeal plane for the inaugural Cumberland Con in Somerset, Kentucky, at the John Sherman Cooper Community Arts Center!

This is going to be an amazing local event here in Russell Springs, with a variety of vendors and awesome people, hosted at what we think is probably the coolest venue around.
