Editorial Statement
Alienation Magazine operates off of two key principles: radical empathy and critical evaluation.
We start with radical empathy because the world is much more than a reified market. It is an ecosystem, a planet, a community. None of us will survive without the other. If we take that as a fundamental truth, then we need to care for each other wholly and without hesitation or qualification.
Once we can look at the world with an empathetic lens, we must also look at it with a critical one as well. Context is imperative. It is crucial to holistic comprehension. Critical evaluation of tone, source, bias, temporality, intent, effect: it is all taken into consideration at Alienation to further our learning, to further your learning, and to make sure that we do not slip down the slick slope of rhetorical fallacy.
With these ideas in mind, the goal of Alienation is to understand the world around us in as many ways as possible. While longform writing is particularly popular and frequently effective for exploring things like sociology and politics, it is by no means the only form we will explore. We will be hosting live events: discussions, panels, workshops. We will be publishing text content: long-form, short-form, experimental, non-fiction, fiction. We will be publishing multimedia content: images, videos, interactive games and modules.
