Embarrassed. Scared. Free. At peace.

Those are the words that describe me right now as I admit to you what's been going on the last year of my life: I am a recovering alcoholic.

Addiction doesn't care who (bestselling author) or what (a Christian) you are. And it can sneak up on anyone.

But God...

While this last year has been the hardest of my life, it has also been the sweetest. Why have I been talking so much about faith and spirituality this year? Because it's the only thing that got me through the pain and the shame. It saved me -- again.

Pro golfer Grayson Murray died of su***de on Saturday. We thought these words might bebgulpful for anyone else struggling with mental health:

“Do you know what happens when you work out? Run, lift weights, all the things. You create tiny tears in your muscles fibers. That’s why they hurt. But something else happens: That tearing induces a healing response. That healing response makes you stronger.

“Your mental health struggle is the same way. It tears you apart, it hurts, but it’s making you stronger. Some of you are going to be nice and tone after this, am I right?”

We lost another one. Another one where the wrong voices were too loud. The lies were too overpowering. When I say anxiety and depression are an ongoing battle for those of us that struggle with mental health, I mean it. “He today, I tomorrow.” No one is immune. Especially those who have found relief... for a season.

On one hand, this is hard to understand. On the other hand it’s the easiest thing in the world to understand. At least for us fellow strugglers. I’ve been on both sides.

I didn’t know pro golfer Grayson Murray, but he had been open and vulnerable about his struggles recently. And yet he didn’t say enough. There was more he needed to say. We all do. We need to be MORE vulnerable. We need to push towards MORE vulnerability, not less. In fact, we need RADICAL vulnerability.

And we need to normalize that. We need to embrace radical vulnerability so people like Grayson don’t feel like they’ve said too much when they actually haven’t said enough.

If I can offer you one pice of advice it’s this: If you’re struggling, and you think you’ve said too much, go one step further than you think you need to. One step more vulnerable than you’re even comfortable with.

I’m not going to tell you to fight harder. To be stronger. To dig deeper. I’m going to tell you to be weaker. To be more vulnerable. To be even more broken. To throw yourself on to Jesus more radically and violently than you thought you needed to or thought possible, because that’s the only thing that can help when you get so desperate. That weakness is the key to strength. It’s how God’s world works.

I only wish there was more time to let Grayson know that. But at least I’m sharing it with you now.

This is incredible! Do you do this?

This couple shocked me at breakfast this morning. 😳 Here’s the full story.

I have family in town, so we took them to our favorite brunch spot. After we sat down, it wasn’t long before this couple sat near us.

They were quiet and slightly reserved. In other words, you couldn’t accuse them of being showy.

We got our food, and shortly after they got theirs. They were in my direct line of sight, so everything they did I couldn’t help but see. That means I saw exactly what they decided to do next…

They looked at each other, lifted their hands across the table, grabbed each other’s fingers, bowed their heads, and prayed.

They had no reservations about it. Its was so natural. It was so beautiful. It was so… cool.

These days, how often do you see people praying in public? How often do YOU pray in public? I’ll be honest: I rarely pray over my meal in public anymore. It’s just not something that’s top of mind like it once was. I wish I did, though.

I also wish I had this couple’s level of boldness. But more than anything I wish that simply praying before your meal wasn’t considered so bold.

I celebrate this couple. And I also let them convict me. We need more of this, don’t you think?
