Innovating Africa’s Governance

Last month, I had the opportunity to speak about our work at the Madiba Foundation for Good Governance at the Transformative Impact Summit Africa in Zanzibar. It was a gathering of change makers from across the continent and beyond.

The summit had several speakers coming out to speak about their work and the impact their work is making in their respective countries and regions. It was an amazing experience to put it mildly.

The summit was a 3-day immersive experience whose impact felt like 1 year MBA in Innovation programme. It was highly mentally stimulating listening to the change makers speak about their work one after the other.

There were presentations on the use of Web 3 technology for community transformation, climate change resilient agriculture, use of technology to connect relatives who were displaced by conflicts and wars, preservation of watersheds to improve access to potable water and many more brilliant and highly innovative projects that are impacting lives and transforming societies positively.

My session was on Innovating African Governance and I spoke on the Power of Organising and the use of technology to drive development and promote good governance. My primary focus was on the flagship project of Madiba Foundation, which Organising for a New Nigeria (ONN), where we are mobilising active citizens who are passionate about Nigeria and connecting them using our tech platform to work together in their respective states and locality across the country.

I made reference to the Not Too Young Run Movement and the protest/movement. These movements led by young people made a difference no matter how marginal some people might think it was. I was bale to speak more in-depth about the Not Too Young To Run Movement because I was privileged to be part of the National Strategy Team of the movement.

These two movements are a clear example of what is possible when young people come together, organise themselves and stay focused on their goals. It’s unfortunate that the protest turned awry, with loss of lives and destruction of both public and private properties.

Our aspirations for our country and continent are achievable if we have can come together, harness our resources, such skills, energies, creativity etc towards addressing pressing social challenges one at a time.

This vision of a New Nigeria is within reach. Countries like Singapore and the UAE were once in situations similar to ours. A segment of their populations saw the possibility for change and worked towards it, leading to the successes we now celebrate.

Our vision of a New Nigeria can become a reality if we commit to it. The power is in our hands. We must remain hopeful, persistent, and determined.

I have always thought about the relationship between the quality of marriage relationship and work engagement. I believe when there is peace and love in a marriage relationship, it would promote work engagement and productivity.

My wife, Kemi Fred-Adetiba and I are certified marriage mentors, who are passionate about helping couples build a happy home filled with love and joy. We facilitated the first edition of Couples Reset held a few weeks ago by The Finishing Abuja and it was all shades of beautiful. The theme was: Intimacy: His Lily, Her Apple from Songs of Solomon 2:3.

I explained three core types of intimacy in marriage that every couple must pay attention to:
1. Spiritual Intimacy
2. Emotional Intimacy
3. Physical Intimacy

If we can get the first right, the other two will fall in place more easily. The Finishing Church is on a mission to promote kingdom family values and build model marriages that will validate God’s intention for the family institution.

Two years ago, , led by Executive Director Kemi Fred-Adetiba (), visited Kabusa LEA primary school to offer financial support to some of the pupils.

We discovered that many parents struggled to afford the necessary stipends for their children to stay in school. In particular, we met a woman who had brought six children from a crisis-stricken village in Southern Kaduna and couldn't afford their education.

, with support from , adopted those six children that day and now covers their school fees, books, and uniforms. We are committed to supporting them through university.

During our visit, we saw students sitting on the bare floor in their classrooms (see last picture). It was a heartbreaking sight. We promised to take action.

Through a partnership with , we provided 25 chairs, 25 desks, whiteboards, whiteboard markers, and dusters.

We're currently focusing on this specific school, which still needs more chairs, desks, whiteboards, computers, and other teaching and learning materials.

We are also conducting research to assess the challenges facing public primary schools in the FCT.

Investing in proper primary education is crucial. The negative consequences of neglecting it are unthinkable. and are dedicated to seeing this project through.

Meeting and chatting with new and returning young legislators at the Convergence 5.0

They all have inspiring stories and experiences.

I had a chat with a friend, who won her election into the Delta State House of Assembly. She spoke about how the electioneering campaigns strengthened her resolve to prioritize the well being of the people.

The story of Cephas in Benue was interesting. The party platform he used to win his first election chose another candidate for the second run. He decided to go to another party and won the second time. He was able to win the second time on another platform because his people felt the impact of his work.

Politics is not easy in Nigeria. But these young people are committed to changing the game. Wishing them all the very best.
