I am very excited about this!
Usually I'm a "the book was better than the movie" person, but Sally Field ... it's going to have to be great now!

Sally Field is in talks to star in an adaptation of "Remarkably Bright Creatures" for Netflix.

I love this year's Doodle winner! The winner didn't show up on this picture, but it's a family dinner, from a sweet girl who didn't want that to change when she grows up and goes to college. :)

WINNERS! Doodle for Google

The past couple of months I've had a cool assignment -- getting to write profiles of a few outstanding seniors graduating from Guilford College this year. Here's a link to one of them, Trinity, who I know will do great things as she embarks on her next adventures in life.

Trinity says the research and writing she did for her thesis instilled in her the tools and confidence to succeed.

Editing tip: When you start a new chapter, make sure your reader knows quickly exactly what time/place they are in, if it's different than where the previous chapter left off.

This is a good thing to ask of your beta readers!

This is pretty darn cool! Glancing through the list, it's interesting to see what authors made it multiple times. And it's quite a study in the changing trends of book covers.

Books can be an escape from reality, but they can also serve to educate and empower. Kudos to Bookmarks, a great independent bookstore in Winston-Salem, for their Books with Purpose Series which kicks off today.
"Since 2021, Book with Purpose has challenged, inspired, entertained, and educated on topics that range from mental health to racism to immigration and now for 2024: voting rights."

The Spotlight on Salem Writers is an author showcase to recognize and celebrate the work of Salem College writers. Join us for a relaxing afternoon of prose and poetry read by graduating seniors! This event is free with no registration required.

Happy Earth Day!
I got to write up a story of how Albany United School District switched from disposable ware to resuable thanks to a grant for a new dishmachine, a perfect story to share on Earth Day. Projects like this help highlight how sometimes making a difference for the environment isn't always glamorous or fun, like litter sweeps along a greenway. It can be something as simple as installing a new dishmachine.
How will you make a difference? I plan on taking a trash mag with me on my next run, for one.

Learn how Albany United School District made the switch to Reusable Ware with grant funding to purchase a Hobart Conveyor Type Commercial Dishwasher.

A grammar lesson in honor of Taylor Swift's upcoming release: Tortured Poets Department.
Should the title have an apostrophe? And if so, where should it go?
Where do you stand on the debate?
I personally like it without one. It looks better on the album cover, for one. And it's still correct, as in Tortured Poets is the name of the Department. Similar to Editorial Freelancers Association, not Editorial Freelancers' Association. The second makes it an association belonging to editorial freelancers. The first way the words "editorial freelancers" describe the type of association.
What I love most about this article? The story at the end, a great example of Taylor Swift interacting with a fan.

Grammarians wonder: Should there be an apostrophe in “The Tortured Poets Department”?

Yesterday was World Autism Awareness Day, something I didn't realize until this morning when I saw posts on other social media.
A few years ago I had to honor of working with Brady Wright's mom to help edit his writing. His dream was to publish a book. What I read was eye-opening. Brady's words, through his journal entries and poems, are a window into his mind, putting words to his thoughts and feelings, the struggles and joys he faces daily,
This non-verbal, autistic young man communicated with his parent through grunts and hand gestures until he was 13, when he was able to start using computer-assisted communication. And that's when the writing began.

Looking for movies to watch over the long holiday weekend? Might I suggest Iron Claw. It's Zac Ephron as you've never seen him before. Gives you a hit of Jeremy Allen White while you wait for The Bear to come back with new episodes. And I spent literally hours reading articles about this family after watching the movie. Even if you aren't into wrestling, the story of this family will get to you.
What good movies have you watched recently?

Love dogs? Love hunting? Or just love reading good books by North Carolina writers? Check out the new book from Shawn Bennett. I loved working with him on this manuscript. He calls it "a love story to his dog," but it's much more than that. He shares great stories about hunting in eastern North Carolina (and other places), written in beautiful prose.

The old-time outdoor writers often wrote of the ancient red gods that called men into nature to hunt. In this book the author takes you on a unique journey with his once-in-a-lifetime Labrador Retriever as he answers that primordial call. The story chronicles the life of this special retriever fr...

Buyer beware! Scams on Amazon are nothing new, but with AI, it seems these scam books are even easier to produce. Writers especially need to constantly monitor to make sure they're not being used, and contact the powers that be immediately to get any scam books taken down.

Authors say that the proliferation of AI-generated books can lead customers into buying the wrong book on Amazon and that these books can harm authors' sales numbers and reputations.

Happy Women's History Month!
In celebration, here's a spotlight on a few women making a big impact in the Foodservice Equipment industry. It's the third year I've had the honor of working on this article, and every time I'm so inspired by their passion and dedication to the industry.

I have found a new favorite romance writer in Emily Henry. I've already read Beach Read and Happy Place. I'd love to write like her. Wouldn't we all? here are a few tips from her publisher for writers looking to get their own romance novel started.

Vikki Moynes, commissioning editor at Viking, which is an imprint of Penguin General, works on commercial and upmarket fiction – from laugh-out-loud romcoms like Emily Henry’s Book Lovers to intoxicating, compulsive tales of deadly secrets like Heather Darwent’s The Things We Do To Our Friends...

I might have found a niche! I'm on a roll, with the third published article in Business Insider as of this month, all with a focus on parenting college students.
When the one on making sure I taught my daughter what she needed to know before going to college got published though, I realized it fell short of saying what I really wanted to say. Lesson to writers: Pitching is fun and challenging at the same time. Sometimes your vision gets changed to meet the publication's tone or the word count. But pitch anyway! Getting the byline is rewarding.
And you can always do what I did: Write even more in your personal blog!

Last month I wrote this little article for Business Insider about how I panicked over the summer and worried I hadn’t taught Caroline everything she needed to know before going to college. I was afraid she wouldn’t know the answers to every little thing in life. The article describes a few of th...

Pulitzer? Booker Prize? My hands-down favorite book award announcement comes each year with the ALA's Newberry and Caldecott winners. This year the top two look great. But all of the books that made the list are worth checking out.

The top honors in this year's children's book awards from the American Library Association lauded Dave Egger's The Eyes and the Impossible and Vashti Harrison's picture book Big.

I might not have gotten around to my writing goal of publishing a romance novel yet, but I do get to tell some good love stories in my business writing! Check out the story of Caitlin and Chase's wedding at the beautiful Legacy Stables and Events in Winston-Salem.

On a beautiful spring day, with azalea bushes in full bloom and the sky a bright blue, Caitlin and Chase Hinson were married in front of friends and family in the Salem Stallway at the Grace Barn. It was a fairytale moment years in the making, as the high school sweethearts tied the knot after […]
