After the Cold War, nearly all of the old Maginot fortresses were left abandoned. Copper thieves quickly discovered the abundant copper inside the network, with the power plant being the main target. This one is no different, having been nearly completely stripped.

Deep under the hills of northern France lies this spectacular scene. The concrete floor of a long corridor inside this Maginot fortress has broken open. This is due to natural gypsum, on which the fortress was built. When in contact with water, this material expands, slowly destroying this once state-of-the-art defensive structure.

In the 1980s, the French government initiated a plan to revitalize the coal mining industry for greater energy autonomy. This required modernizations and the digging of new pits. One smaller detail of this wave of modernizations is this old recreational area, which was once created for miners to rest and converse with their fellow workers.

Since the early 1900s, hundreds of miners started and ended their day in these halls. In the early 2000s, all of the workers were sent home, never to return, which left this hall abandoned. However, details of its rich past remain in its impressive architecture.

To access the deep depths of the coal mine, large machines called hoisting engines are needed. This unit was built by the French firm Alsthom back in the late 1940s. Today, this piece of industrial history is long abandoned and is used to store hay by a local farmer.
