From international award winning author Peter Difatta, this coming of age novel has won First Prize in the William Faulkner Literary Award for Emerging Writers. Finding Pluck was praised as being a “highly readable, sophisticated narrative structure,” which also demonstrated “a pleasing twist
on the traditional bildungsroman, the novel about growing up.”
It is 1995 in North Carolina and Taylor Hanes is struggling to escape his small-minded dying textile town. He finds his ticket out by being awarded a full-ride Pluck Gay and Le***an Equality Scholarship to a state university. Suddenly, he is shocked to be faced with hometown discrimination, but worse yet, he awakens the wrath of the long dead scholarship’s benefactor. The hauntings continue into college and Taylor along with a group of friends investigate why the benefactor is an unsettled spirit. Taylor struggles with this while also being forced to carry out duties related to his scholarship, which enlightens his understanding of the human cost of prejudice and furthers his resolve to help the restless spirit find answers to cross over. As the friends dig deeper, the narrative draws parallels in the lives of the characters as it deftly moves from the present university time frame to when the benefactor attended college in 1927, during the pinnacle of the Jazz age, a period of great change and moral conflict. This is a novel based on actual examples of the culture of prejudice and connects with the heart as well as with the mind. Utility - The Devil Chronicles
