Sad day as legendary engineer, Steve Albini, has unexpectedly passed away. Steve's love of analog and his methods and approach to recording had a big influence on my own style of recording. I admired his work and largely followed his philosophy of what an engineer/producer's role should be in the studio. RIP, Steve.

Working with producer-arranger-conductor Thom Bell, the five-man group consisting of Philippé Wynne, Bobbie Smith, Henry Fambrough, Billy Henderson, and Pervis Jackson (and later, John Edwards) came to define the sound of smooth and sophisticated Philadelphia soul in the 1970s even as they paved the way for disco. With Bell’s singular arrangements and the unmistakable musicianship of MFSB supporting them, The Spinners delivered rich, textured harmonies on hit after hit including “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Sadie,” “The Rubberband Man,” and the No. 1 duet “Then Came You” with Dionne Warwick. From soul and pop to funk and dance, The Spinners transcended the tag of R&B to make a style all their own. On the eve of their long-awaited induction into the 2023 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to celebrate The Spinners on The Complete Atlantic Singles: The Thom Bell Productions 1972-1979. This definitive 2-CD anthology presents every one of the quintet’s beloved A- and B-sides helmed by Thom Bell on Atlantic Records during that halcyon period–with each and every song in its original single version (7” only…we had to leave out the 12-inch version of “If You Wanna Do a Dance” for timing reasons). That’s a total of 43 mighty tracks on 2 CDs, more than half of which are unique edits, including 19 Pop hits and 22 R&B hits! Most of these are new to CD, and all are freshly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision from new tape transfers. The Complete Atlantic Singles: The Thom Bell Productions 1972-1979 also includes a deluxe booklet with rare photos and memorabilia. The track-by-track liner notes from The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese draw on a new interview with the last surviving member of the classic Spinners lineup, Henry Fambrough, as well as an unpublished interview with the late Thom Bell (Marchese also contributes a heartfelt tribute to the late, great Thom Bell, who was a good friend). The Spinners’ Complete Atlantic Singles is a “One of a Kind” collection for the ages…the pinnacle of sweet ‘70s soul!

When the self-described “disco queen” known as Sylvester stepped on a New York stage opening for Chaka Khan, the local press was entranced. One newspaper approvingly noted that he made “David Bowie look like Lawrence Welk.” Nothing was too outrageous for Sylvester. But at his core, he was serious about music and about breaking down the walls of identity. In appearance and demeanor, the unapologetically gay San Francisco star challenged the gender binary long before such discussions were in the mainstream, going far beyond androgyny to create a striking persona all his own. Now, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records celebrate the late trailblazer with the release of the first comprehensive anthology of his seminal recordings for Fantasy Records. Disco Heat: The Fantasy Years 1977-1981 features 25 tracks on two CDs drawn from all six of his albums for the label, as well as the rare 12-inch Disco Versions that kept the dancefloors burning. In addition to versions of every hit Sylvester scored for Fantasy featuring crossover smashes like “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” and “Dance (Disco Heat),” the collection offers an array of remarkable covers including his moving live version of Patti LaBelle’s “You Are My Friend,” a smoldering medley of Barry Manilow’s “Could It Be Magic” and Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” Leiber and Stoller’s dramatic “I (Who Have Nothing),” Ashford and Simpson’s “Over and Over,” the Peggy Lee standard “Fever,” and Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “I Took My Strength from You.” Featuring the vocals of Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash, later known as The Weather Girls, Disco Heat traces Sylvester’s Fantasy career with an emphasis on the bold dance music he made, underscoring the significance of black and gay artists to the creation of disco itself. Joe Marchese of The Second Disc provides detailed new liner notes placing Sylvester’s music into the context of the era, while the audio has been newly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision. Disco Heat, released in time for Pride Month 2023, is a striking tribute to the enduring and ahead-of-his-time diva. “Sometimes folks make us feel strange,” Sylvester told a New York audience in 1978, “but we’re not strange. And those folks – they’ll just have to catch up.” The world has finally caught up with The Fabulous Sylvester.

How would you like to hear a new side—or should we say sides—of the world’s greatest funk band? This 3-LP, 40-track collection presents the A and B-side of every single that organist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter, Jr., and drummer Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste cut for the Josie, Reprise & Warner Bros. label, virtually their entire singles output (all but two co-produced by the late, great Allen Toussaint) save for a few odds ‘n’ ends issued mostly overseas.
That means that you not only get every hit along with its hard-to-find B-side but also the rare single mixes, including the especially rare original mono single mixes of the 1968-1971 Josie sides, very few of which have appeared on vinyl since their original 45 release (the first three LP sides are all mono; the last three, featuring the later Reprise and Warner Bros. singles, presents all stereo single mixes).
These songs represent the mother lode of New Orleans funk, classic tracks like “Sophisticated Cissy,” “Cissy Strut,” “Look-Ka Py Py,” “Chicken Strut,” “Hand Clapping Song,” “Hey Pocky A-Way,” and more. And, with liner notes by Bill Dahl featuring quotes from Nocentelli, Neville, and Porter, this 3- LP set offers the best vinyl retrospective to date of this enormously influential band.
And how’s the sound? Well, after extensive and exhaustive tape research, we were able to come up with original tape sources for all but five of these single sides, and the remastering—by Mike Milchner at SonicVision—is tight. Now available in a lower-priced black vinyl version for crate-diggers everywhere!
