Intro trailer for the next video (Listen with the sound) - Let me know what you think. If it sucks I'll try another approach ;)
Francisco de Almeida's letter on Dec 8, 1508 to King Manuel I just prior to his departure to the city of Diu to confront the ones who killed his son. It shows his conviction to king and country.
Was going to use this as a background in the next video - but then thought, the mandalas might be a bit much.
A snippet from video production this morning - 25 minutes of video down to a 2minute time lapse
Doing Utah Beach in style - in a WW2 Jeep!!
Stain Glass window in St Mere Eglise - featuring the 82nd Airborne
The Merderet River going through Valogne - Beautiful city. This river cuts down the middle of the Contentin peninsula - any bridges over it would be (as they said in Saving Private Ryan) - prime real estate
The airborne museum in St Mere Eglise
In late 1505 Francisco de Almeida and his son Lourenço were conducting raiding missions on Arabian ships coming in from the Red Sea. The Arabian captains diverted to the Maldives ignorer to avoid the Portuguese Armada. Lourenço was sent in to intercept them, but the water currents were unknown to him and he was taken far to the East. He would be the first Portuguese to make landfall on Ceylon and established first contact with its raja.
A member of the audience asked what a time lapse looks like. This is the way I created the base map for the Siege of Mombasa in 1505 - just added the map and then did some of the background waves. Nothing too fancy. From here I'd add people, ships, cannons. etc.
7th Portuguese Armada heads out! 21 ships, 1500 men. On board Gaspar da Gama, veteran of the India run and Ferdinand Magellan (still training). In time this man would be credited as being the first to circumnavigate the world - albeit he would be doing it for a different country
Battle of Toro - March 1, 1476. Portugal invades Castile as Afonso V tries his hand to take the Castilian throne. Ferdinand de Almeida was in this battle - a foreshadowing of his future military prowess.
Day 1 of hiking: Cherbourg to Valognes. Take a walk in Normandy they said. . . it would be a fun time they said. Anyone wanna join me if I do this again ?
Sept 19,2023 - We got up from our hotel near the Luxembourg Gardens and hiked passed the Louvre, down the Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe and then to the Saint-Lazare train station to get on our train to Normandy.
I was teaching my boy to play pool - didn't realize I was getting schooled
Duarte Pereira with his 150 men, 3 ships, and Cochin Allies took on the Samudri Raja of Calicut's army of 65,000. Part 2 of the Battle of Cochin 1504 is half way done!
Ok Portugal - what do you say when you're about to go into battle?
Battle of Calicut 1503 - near the port city of Calicut, the Portuguese took on a larger fleet that was assembled by the Samudri Raja. In one of the first times in recorded history, the Portuguese Admiral, Vasco da Gama, had his fleet arranged in a line to bring all their broadsides to bear. The Indian fleet was nearly annihilated by this tactic and superior European gunfire.
The city of Kannur 1502 - It already had a Portuguese presence and after Vasco da Gama came, it would become a focal ally. Eventually the Cartaz system would be established - creating licensing system for all trade on the Indian Ocean. Portuguese Hegemony had begun.
Omaha Beach Memorial - in the evening they played taps. So much respect for those that died here.
