“We should discipline ourselves in small things, and from these progress to things of greater value.” // Epictetus
Six months ago, I was at my heaviest—an unhealthy 205 lbs. Then, after dealing with some depression, I dropped to 170 lbs in a very unhealthy manner. Now, I’m back up to a strong and healthy 195 lbs, and aside from some old-man joint issues, I’m in the best shape of my life.
I haven’t been as consistent as I wanted, but I’ve been more consistent than ever before. My diet? Still a work in progress. If I locked it in, I’d probably start seeing abs instead of just trusting they exist. But strength-wise? Huge difference. Those 200lb trash cans of seed that I could barely move and almost made me s #%t myself getting them in the barn? Now, they get moved with a lot less trepidation.
The biggest lesson? Just show up and do the work. Even when you don’t feel like it. Even when the motivation isn’t there. Consistency beats intensity in the long run. If you can’t hit a full workout, do something. Even a little progress is still progress. Six months ago, I wasn’t sure where I’d be. Today, I know I’m moving forward.
