08/06/2024

What a fantastic gig last night by The Steve Rothery Band at Glasgow’s Oran Mor. The show opened with a short selection of tracks from his last solo album The Ghosts of Pripyat, before the promised 45 years of Marillion set which really did cover all the bases and included, for the first time in 40 years, Forgotton Sons from the band’s debut album – sounding as fresh and sinister as it did all those years ago. Mr Rothery’s trademark guitar textures are all over these tracks in all the right places but the rest of the band clearly know their way around the setlist ensuring an exceptional performance throughout. And a special mention has to go to local lad Martin Jakubski who put in a superb shift on vocals covering both eras of the band whilst engaging with a highly appreciative audience – even though his physique was somewhat unfairly compared to another vocalist who was on stage at the same time through in Edinburgh!

I would never have expected that a setlist running to just over two hours could do justice to the idea of celebrating 45 years of Marillion, but they certainly achieved that and more. I’d go back and see them again tonight if I hadn’t made plans elsewhere and if you’re in the Glasgow area, I’d strongly urge you not to miss this one. A special mention also goes to Iamthemorning for putting on a full band support slot and clearly picking up more than a few new fans in the process.

After a few days break, the guys will be on stage next Friday and Saturday in Manchester at. Band On the Wall, where the support slot will fall to Steve’s backing guitarist Dave Foster and his band whose latest release Maybe they’ll Come Back For Us is the featured album on this week’s Kiss That Prog. Wherever you are, if you can get along to any of these shows, do yourself a favour and grab a ticket before they sell out.

This week we have a guest presenter – all the way from Germany. Larne Peters who presents Larne’s Finest every Saturday night on www.progalley.eu has arrived in the UK for a short break and to take in some gigs. We were at Ivory Blacks in Glasgow on Monday to see Long Earth along with The Emerald Dawn – making their Scottish debut. He’s now heading down south to the The Soundle Music Festival 2024 which takes place at The Key Theatre in Peterborough this weekend. So we decided to mark the occasion by playing all the acts on the bill along with a selection of German artists recommend by Larne. I might have squeezed in one or two of my own favourite acts as well!

So tune in this week at whichever timeslot suits you best and as always, we’ll take care of everything else.

YES - GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL FRIDAY 24th MAY
It’s finally happened, after the disappointment of their 2023 tour being cancelled, prog legends Yes are back with their Classic Tales of Yes tour and clearly more than keen to make up for lost time. The band, in previous decades may have had a deserved reputation for perpetually changing their line-up, but the guys taking the stage at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall tonight have recorded and played live together since 2017. The most stable line-up in the band’s 56-year history and it clearly shows in the standard of performance on display. Longest serving band member and lead guitarist Steve Howe continues to defy the march of time with a virtuosic performance combining classic and improvisational riffs seamlessly in a manner that would shame many of his younger peers. Following his short-lived tenure with the band in 1980, Geoff Downes returned to the fold in 2011 – marking the longest continual presence in the band of any of their alumni of keyboard players and smoothly combines his own distinctive technique with the expectations of those in the audience who know their way around every lead run and texture. Former Glass Hammer vocalist Jon Davison has been on mic duties since 2012 and his performance tonight is pitch and note perfect as regular attendees in recent years will have come to expect. Bass player Billy Sherwood and drummer Jay Schellen – both in the band at the behest of their sadly departed predecessors Chris Squire and Alan White know they have much more than a legacy to live up to and in that regard they’re both at the top of their game steering the band with a rhythm section that instinctively drives the show forward at full speed then eases off when necessary.

The show opens with a blistering Machine Messiah from 1980’s Drama, before leaping forward to It Will Be A Good Day (The River) from 1999’s The Ladder. Apart from a brief introduction to their current album Mirror To The Sky in the shape of Cut From The Stars, the setlist, as would be hoped for, is packed with classics from their golden age. Nothing from Close To the Edge, but as that album formed the centrepiece of their last tour back in 2022 that’s hardly surprising and certainly forgivable. Fan favourites like Fragile, The Yes Album and Going For the One are well represented with Time And A Word and Don’t Kill The Whale also given a new lease of life.

But the name of the show is Classic Tales Of Yes and this year marks the 50th anniversary of Tales From Topographic Oceans – an album that polarised both band members and fans in the same way that The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway did the same year for Genesis. But it has certainly stood the test of time and tonight it is being represented by a 20-minute medley of its strongest moments. This unique interpretation took more than a few unexpected left and right turns but flawless performances along the way ensured we all got there in the end.

The band left the stage to the enthusiastic cheers of a highly appreciative audience, returning for a brace of encores – Roundabout followed by Starship Trooper and the crowd would have gladly stayed for more.

There are plenty of highly vocal Yes fans who think the band should not have continued without the presence of one or more former members. If that’s your opinion then I have to suggest that it’s also your loss. All I can say is that I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen every incarnation live since 1980 and tonight’s show was one of the most cohesive and impressive performances I have witnessed from the band in any shape or form. As long as they’re happy to continue recording and performing then I’ll be happy to turn up on the night – a view clearly shared by those in the audience who braved the traditional Glasgow rainy summer night to bear witness to this. The tour continues throughout the UK until Tuesday 4th June and there are still a few tickets left for some of these shows. Get along if you can. It’ll Be A Good Night!
