The Port-Royal/Annapolis Royal area is the “CRADLE OF ACADIE”, and should be part of the pilgrimage of all Acadians coming to Nova Scotia to trace their roots. At 8:00 am sharp on Saturday, November 1, 2024 the brand new ACADIAN ODYSSEY MONUMENT marking Annapolis Royal as a Deportation site was installed at Fort Anne National Historic Site. It is located overlooking the wharf where 1664 Acadians were deported from Annapolis Royal (formerly Port-Royal) on December 8, 1755. They were put on 6 ships and a schooner destined for the British colonies of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

The Historical Association of Annapolis Royal contributed $10,000.00 and has been working to have a monument installed at the deportation site since 2019 as its major project for the Congrès mondial acadien 2024. The Association joined forces with Parks Canada Halifax, Jean Gaudet, President of the Acadian Odyssey Commission, plus other donors and interested parties to help this important project come to fruition. The monument was installed today by Gilles Cyr, owner of Brunswick Monuments Ltd. who was assisted by Craig Cook of Annapolis Home Hardware.

The Acadian Odyssey Commission was created and developed by the Société Nationale de l'Acadie in 1999 with the goal of permanently highlighting the Odyssey of the Acadian people in Canada, North America and the world. A total of 18 other monuments have been erected since 2005, including 5 in New Brunswick, 4 in Nova Scotia, 1 in Prince Edward Island, 1 in Newfoundland and Labrador, 4 in Quebec, 2 in Louisiana, and 1 on Miquelon Island (France).

A ceremony will be held at Fort Anne National Historic Site to officially unveil the monument at 1:30 pm on Sunday, December 8, 2024. This date marks 269 years to the day since the Acadians were deported from Annapolis Royal. Follow Explorer Guide on Facebook and our website at www.ExploreAnnapolisRoyal.com
as we will share more detailed information as it becomes available. The Historical Association of Annapolis Royal's ACADIAN VISITORS GUIDE is also available at this same link. We sincerely thank all of the people, companies and organizations who have participated in any way!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Town of Annapolis Royal's historic new Town Council! Pictured left to right: Sybil Skinner Robertson, Heather Sadkowski, Amery Boyer (Mayor), Adele MacDonald and Lynn Myers.

They are pictured at Town Hall with a monument honouring Daurene Lewis who was elected mayor in 1984. She was the first Black woman to be a mayor in Canada. To the left of the group is the historic panel showcasing the life of Daurene's ancestor, Rose Fortune, and her descendants. Rose was a successful entrepreneur in Annapolis Royal. She is often referred to as Canada's first policewoman and was recently recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance.

The series of "firsts" in municipal elections continues as this is the first time in Annapolis Royal's history that the citizens have elected an all-female council. We wish them all the best as they write the next chapter in the story of Annapolis Royal ~ one of Canada's oldest towns and Nova Scotia's first capital.

The Swearing-In Ceremony was covered live by Explorer Guide's Alan Melanson and The Historical Association of Annapolis Royal's Tammy Andrews-Tupper. To view the ceremony click

TRICK OR TREAT TRAIL ~ Let's have some fun!!! Add your photos and Halloween memories in the comments. A "Must See" is the fang-tastic 1854 Gothic-inspired home of David and Tammy Andrews-Tupper, located at 1325 Highway 201 in Round Hill, Nova Scotia.

They will be handing out candy on Halloween, and all are welcome. Tammy is also working on a special video projection. Visitors will be able to tune into a radio station from their car and listen to the video on her lawn. (Tentatively 96.2 FM). Follow Explorer Guide's post for more details.

Decorated in all it's spooktacular splendour, Tammy began making the displays in July with the Headless Horseman. She knew he was going to be tall but didn’t realize just how tall he would end up being. He stands at a whopping 8’ 2” tall and was made from 1 and 3/4” sheets of plywood and black outdoor paint (bought from Fraser's PRO Home Centre).

Tammy hit a slight snag when she broke her left wrist in August while, ironically, hanging a "Fall" garland in her kitchen. This slowed down the progress of her Halloween display a little, but by the end of September, Tammy with her well-known “can-do spirit” bounced back and started crafting her spooky witches coven. The black silhouettes in the windows were created with Bristol Board from various stores in town (including Annapolis Royal Variety Store and Loose Ends Trading Co.), and the green lighting behind the silhouettes came from Annapolis Home Hardware Building Centre.

Tammy "Explored Annapolis Royal", and everything she needed was right here. Now that her witch's hovel is complete, she can sit back, watch her Halloween movies, sip on warm apple cider and wait for Trick or Treaters on October 31st.

Tammy is an avid crafter and the creative owner of Vintage Fabric Finds Handmade in Canada. She is a member of the Board of Directors of The Historical Association of Annapolis Royal and loves Halloween. Her “HAUNTING TALES OF ANNAPOLIS ROYAL” video series with Explorer Guide's Alan Melanson are available on Explorer Guide’s page and YouTube channel.

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN! We look forward to seeing YOUR PHOTOS ~ house decorations, pumpkin carvings, your pets and little ghosts and goblin Trick or Treaters etc. ~ and reading your Halloween stories and memories when you post them as comments to this post on the EXPLORER GUIDE page!!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
