38th Anniversary of the fabulous Reggae Report Small Axe Awards! The best of the best, as nominated by and voted for by the fans and readers of Reggae Report Magazine!
Check it! 💚💛💖

Big up 's M Peggy Quattro & the incredible RR crew on the 38rd Anniversary of its ! On this day in 1986, the best of the best in , as chosen by the fans & readers of the magazine, were awarded the unique Small Axe award. From performances by Dennis Brown & Black Uhuru Official to Judy Mowatt, Mutabaruka & Cedella Marley Booker, the Konover Hotel in Miami Beach was filled with vibes, sharp tuxes, gorgeous gowns & joyful smiles!

We want to thank everyone who helped make this vision a reality, especially sistah & producer Teri "Lioness" Owens for her 100% belief and commitment.

Although the theater was full, with a huge number of with unpaid, overstuffed guest lists, we lost big money on this production. Proud to say this was a major achievement & acknowledgement of our stars, trailblazers, reputation & fans...but the sting of not even breaking even lasts today.

We do thank our sponsors & volunteers whose contribution made it happen. And we appreciate the love & support from the local & JA media & county officials who lifted our spirits, and especially grateful to the artists who respected our efforts and turned up to perform & receive their fan-voted-for award. In return, they were treated with the love & respect they deserve, well-cared for by our team, & the result was an amazing show that those who were there will never forget.

There is some video from this night that is being worked on so it can be shared with this story. It's rough footage (come on it was 1986!) but the result will be an entertaining & integral part of .

Happy blessed Earthday to brother Dean Ivanhoe Fraser, aka Cannon - the man, the maestro, the musician. Since the mid-’70s, the always-affable Dean Fraser has either been a part of a Rass Brass section–i.e., from We the People for Dennis Brown and the Sonny Bradshaw Seven–to his own popular in-demand 809 Band, to a sax soloist and singer with several albums and singles on record since the ’80s.🎷

Dean Fraser is an acclaimed member of the Jamaican musical fraternity! For nearly 50 years, DeanO has recorded or performed with innumerable artists, such as Luciano, Taurrus Riley, and Morgan Heritage. He’s still called whenever a musical director or producer is needed. In 1993, Dean Fraser was awarded the Musgrave Medal by the Jamaican government in recognition of his services and dedication to music. 🥰

Big up, mi fren . . . and here’s to many more spins on this turntable called life! 🎂🎊

Blessed & loving memories of brother Lucky Dube on his Earthstrong! South Africa’s king was a prolific songwriter, performer and an intensely authentic human being. In a style reminiscent of singer Peter Tosh, Lucky’s multi-octave vocal delivery stood out as strictly his own.

From teenage Mbaqanga singer to blowing away Sunsplash during his debut Jamaica performance; from the first post-apartheid concert before a multi-racial 80,000 in his native Johannesburg’s Ellis stadium to recipient of the World Music Award for Best Selling African Artist, Lucky remained a humble warrior. He was consumed with a purpose and integrity, lit by an innate humor and humanity that was received by a world of fans, friends and followers. Those same fans - and generations more - gather now to celebrate his life and legacy...play some Lucky Dube today!

In 2011, Publisher M Peggy Quattro did an interview with Franco Forbes for his Reggae Nostalgia radio show. Listening to it again today, it was centered on her attempt to raise awareness & money for the Reggae Report Archive, and on discussing topics relevant right now in 2024. MPeggyQ says:

We spoke out about the summer festivals – a popular topic going on right now – only then they were abundant in Europe, South America, & the USA. In 2011, I mentioned “Jamaican artists have to become more professional” and learn to” play the game,” i.e., contracts, deadlines, limitations, and pricing. We see now, 13 years later, summer fests being canceled way too often. Raising the question: “Is it the artist or the promoter?”

I talked about young artists having to pay their dues and the importance of learning the Reggae business. In 2024, I am still calling out the need for guidance, education, and opportunities to learn the business, i.e., scholarships and corporate assistance. My question today remains, Where is the Bob Marley Performing Arts Center in Kingston, Jamaica?

Franco played some of my favorites – Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, and Beres Hammond – between our chats. Conversation turned to the differences in exposure and remuneration for male and female artists. My take then: no fair deal. I bragged about Reggae Report’s popular Women in Reggae issues, and the women we highlighted – legends like Marcia, Judy, and JC Lodge, and newcomers like Cherine, Etana, and Ifrica.

When asked about awards shows and their longevity and importance, I mentioned that an awards show requires lots of lead time, hard work, and a team with a solid leader. I told the story of my 1986 Small Axe Awards. Winners were voted for by our fans and readers; featured performers included Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Judy Mowatt, Mutabaruka, and Mother Booker. I told how I lost a lot. Why? No sponsors – where were the corporations or government sectors? They wanted “to see it first.” Reggae was still considered “niche,” a “vertical market,” and now, in 2024, it’s the most popular music, loved and played in just about every country in the world. Niche, indeed.

Franco asked if there would be a special issue of Reggae Report highlighting our best articles, interviews, and photos. I mentioned my vision of a coffee table book. Now, in 2024, I am working on exclusive eBooks, each featuring Reggae history with up-close-and-personal stories and photos of the phenomenal 80s & 90s, Reggae’s Global Era. The same way I talked about how the coffee table book would give “everyone a second wind, a burst of energy, exposure, and enthusiasm,” the soon-to-come eBooks will shine the spotlight back on the vanguard of artists, performers, singers, musicians, producers, writers, and photographers who were committed to planting Reggae music on the world map.

We invite fans, friends, and fam to have a listen to the Reggae Nostalgia podcast and my incredibly nostalgic 2011 interview with Franco Forbes!
