Africa, home to over 1.3 billion humans, continues to be looted. With 500 million plus people living in extreme poverty. Africa is now home to 1 in 2 humans living in extreme poverty and hunger.
Wildlife trafficking in Africa is a source of funding for militias, with the illegal ivory trade alone generating US$400 million in illicit income each year. There were 3,500 victims of terrorist acts in sub-Saharan Africa last year, nearly 50% of those recorded worldwide.
With 60% of Africa’s population under 25 years of age, young people are both the future of the continent [and the world] and its most vulnerable citizens.
Mental health problems affect 116 million people in Africa, up from 53 million in 1990. The continent also has six of the top 10 countries for su***de in the world, while for each su***de in Africa, there are an estimated 20 su***de attempts.
Despite the problem's urgency, African governments allocate less than 50 US cents per person to treat mental health problems. This is five times more than in 2017 but is still well below the recommended 2 US dollars per person for low-income countries.
Mental health care is generally not included in national health insurance schemes, WHO says, noting that there is only one psychiatrist for every 500,000 inhabitants in Africa. This is 100 TIMES BELOW the WHO recommendation.
