In the last few years, I have read A LOT of books, like a lot, mostly business and non-fiction. A few years ago, I put together a list of my top picks like “Shoe Dog”, “Sapiens”, and “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F”

I read a substantial number of interesting books, but it doesn’t happen often that I read a book that I believe may be THE BEST I have ever read, until this past week.

What’s interesting about this book is that there isn’t some secret you couldn’t have read elsewhere, but rather it is the story behind the lesson that stays with you.

To me, the most impactful lesson was in the very beginning of the book, and it is a line you’ve heard a million times “people won’t remember what you do for them, they will remember how you make them feel.” But he tells the story on the backdrop of his mother’s battle with cancer, and his 4-hour dinner experience with his dad after she passed away.

“That night was the saddest I have ever been, or ever want to be, and the same was true for my dad. Yet, even in the midst of that sorrow, Chef Boulud and his staff were able to give the two of us what still feels like four of the best hours of my life.” (Pages 18-19)
