Tsunami was an ambitious project ApexVFX undertook back in early 2019. ApexVFX worked on 130+ shots on a tight deadline with a small vfx crew and on a very tight budget compared to the size of the project. Unfortunately, a few key shots are missing in this breakdown due to an archiving issue.
ApexVFX was involved from the pre-production stage, collaborating with the director, Somaratne Dissanayake, the cinematographer, Vishwa Balasooriya, and the producer, Renuka Balasooriya, to plan the shots to utilize the limited budget. Throughout the production stage, ApexVFX was On-set supervising vfx shots with the help of the rest of the film crew to optimize the result with the given resources.
The post-production phase was on a tight deadline with 10 months to finalize 130+ shots. With a few large-scale water/destruction simulations and full CG environments, it looked nearly impossible at times. Some vfx crew members had to wear multiple hats working as both compositors and CG artists, even some artists taking on some aspects they had never worked on before. Despite all the challenges, the crew got together and pulled it through to the finish line.
