Hey, beautiful people! Let’s talk grammar. Doing a self-edit before sending your manuscript to the editor can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars when self-publishing.

It’s all about maintaining harmony between subjects and verbs in a sentence. In English, we want them to agree, like a well-coordinated dance.
Here is an example of a subject-verb agreement:

Incorrect: The team are playing well.
Correct: The team is playing well.

Why is the first sentence incorrect? The key here is to pay attention to the subject, which is “team.” Even though a team might have multiple members, grammatically, we treat it as a single unit. So, the correct form pairs “team” with the singular verb “is.” It’s like making sure the dance partners move in sync!

Using the plural form “are” would be like having mismatched dance steps—it just doesn’t flow. Ensuring that subject-verb agreement is on point maintains grammatical correctness and keeps the communication clear and smooth.

Remember, language is a powerful tool, and when used with precision, it enhances the impact of your message. So, keep those verbs and subjects in perfect harmony in your manuscripts!

"The potential client that you met at the networking event was impressed by your insights."

Now, let's elevate it by using "who":

"The potential client who you met at the networking event was impressed by your insights."

"The potential client whom you met at the networking event was impressed by your insights."

By making this subtle change, you add a personal touch, acknowledging the individuality of the potential client. This distinction is particularly crucial when discussing people in your writing.

Self-editing tip: Whenever you refer to a person, opt for "who" or "whom" to bring a sense of connection and recognition to your narrative. "That" is better suited for non-person entities.
