182 4‑H members, parents and leaders attended the 78th annual Dawson County 4‑H Achievement Barbecue held Sunday night, October 15, 2023 at the Lexington Middle School Cafeteria. Dawson County Cattlemen provided the beef which was prepared by Jolene Block of the Around the Block Catering and the Dawson County 4‑H Foundation provided the trimmings for the annual event. The Pony Express Association and Dawson County Extension Board members served the group in their usual efficient manner.

A Retirement Appreciation gift was presented to Sheryl Fellers (C) for her indispensable service as a part of the Extension Support Staff for 37 years.

Winners of the "I Dare You" Leadership Award were Jacie Wolfinger (L) and Samual Winter (C). The Outstanding 4‑H Member Service Award sponsored by Nebraska Farm Bureau was presented to Sydni Ringenberg (L). Sydni Ringenberg (L) was chosen to receive the Outstanding Junior Leader Award, presented in memory of Melvin Marshall.

Medals for excellence in several project areas were awarded to Bart Beattie (S) – Plant Science; Jaden Hunke (L) – Shooting Sports; Lexi Johnson (G) – Beef; Taylor Kramer (EC) – Sheep; Emma Luther (O) – Food & Nutrition and Gardening & Horticulture; Neala McCall (O) – Rabbits; Aleigha Negley (G) – Goats; Greta Rickertsen (L) – Public Speaking; Wesley Thompson (L) – Clothing & Textiles and Aerospace (Rocketry); Casey Wahlgren (G) – Photography; and Grant Wahlgren (G) – Home Environment, Wildlife and Safety; and Spencer Walahoski (O) – Poultry.

Winners of the Jack Reed Memorial Judging trophy were Parker Walahoski (O), Top Senior Meats Judge; Paige Walahoski (O) Top Junior Meats Judge; Abby Negley (G), Top Senior Livestock Judge; and Paige Walahoski (O), Top Junior Livestock Judge.

Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Pins and Certificates were presented to Gabrielle Caraway (L), Barrett Hunke (L), and Bristol McConville (L).

Josue Casanova (L), Gabrielle Caraway (L), Anna Dillon (C) and Bodee Klemm (L) received the 4‑H Good Start Awards. Augustus Barnes (G), Dallee Barnes (G), Bristol McConville (L) and Griffin Owens (L) received the 4‑H Great Job Awards.

State 4‑H Camp/Conference Trip winners were Preston Beattie (S), Jaden Hunke (L), Trina Pearson (B), Rieker Spradlin (C) and Wesley Thompson (L).

National 4-H Congress $25 cash awards sponsored by Dawson County Farm Bureau were awarded to: Preston Beattie (S); Jaden Hunke (L); Trina Pearson (B); Greta Rickertsen (L); Wesley Thompson (L); Grant Wahlgren (G); and Samual Winter (C).

National 4-H Congress nominees included: Preston Beattie (S); Jaden Hunke (L); Trina Pearson (B); Greta Rickertsen (L); Wesley Thompson (L); Grant Wahlgren (G); and Samual Winter (C).

National 4-H Conference nominees who received Achievement Application medals were: Bart Beattie (S); Preston Beattie (S); Jaden Hunke (L); Taylor Kramer (EC); Emma Luther (O); Trina Pearson (B); Greta Rickertsen (L); Sydni Ringenberg (L); Wesley Thompson (L); Casey Wahlgren (G); Grant Wahlgren (G); and Jaelin Wolfinger (L).

Three, five and 10 year 4‑H members were recognized. Nineteen (19) 4-H members received their 3‑year pins and 24 members received their 5‑year pins. Earning 10‑year pins were: Treyvan Berry (L), Ty Kennicutt (Be), Andrew Kreuscher (G), Jacob Lans (L), Jordan Lans (L), Emma Luther (O), Seth Rhea (L), Mayla Sutherland (C), Casey Wahlgren (G); and Aven Zimmerman (O).

Lengths of service awards were presented to 4‑H leaders. The 4‑H leaders receiving special recognition this year were: Barb Batie (L) for 25 years; Mike Wolff (G) for 20 years; Shana Beattie (S), Kristi Kreuscher (G), Curt Rickertsen (L), Dave Schledewitz (Oc) and Jennifer Schneider (C) for 15 years; and Tina Thompson (L) and Taryn Vonderschmidt (F) for 5 years.

In the 4‑H Council election, Jennifer Hunke (L), Robert Thompson (L), and Taryn Vonderschmidt (F) were elected for three‑year terms. Suzie Wahlgren (G) was elected for a one-year vacant term. Preston Beattie (S), Jaden Hunke (L), and Jaelin Wolfinger (L) will serve on the 4-H Council as youth representatives for a one-year term. Service Certificates to outgoing 4‑H Council members were presented to Carol Keiser (G) and Stephanie Ringenberg (L) in appreciation for their contribution to the 4‑H program.

WOLFINGER CAPTURES TOP SPOT IN MARKET LAMB EVALUATION, RICKERTSEN CONCLUSIVELY TAKES SWINE MUSCLE EVALUATION



Jaelin Wolfinger of Lexington took top honors in the Market Lamb Evaluation Contest as she was awarded the champion trophy for her market lamb. Grant Walahoski owned the reserve champion lamb.

In the Swine Muscle Evaluation Contest, Greta Rickertsen of Lexington grabbed the champion title at the 2023 Dawson County Fair. As Augustus Barnes of Gothenburg received the reserve champion spot.

The 135-pound Champion 4-H market lamb owned by Jaelin Wolfinger, daughter of Jake and Janice Wolfinger, had a .15 back fat with 3.97 square inches of loin eye area and a 49.743 percent lean reading. Grant Walahoski’s lamb had a 49.626 percent lean reading. There were 12 lambs entered in this ultrasound contest. This is the 36th annual Dawson County 4-H Market Lamb Muscle Evaluation Contest.

The Champion 4-H market hog yielding the highest percent muscle was owned by Greta Rickertsen, daughter of Curt and Holly Rickertsen. Greta’s pig had 64.07 percent lean reading, a back fat of 0.40 and 8.43 square inches of loin eye area. Augustus Barnes, son of Tyrell and Malloree Barnes, owned the Reserve Champion market hog with 61.62 percent lean reading. There were 11 hogs entered in the contest. This is the 46th year for the hog carcass contest.

The carcass data was collected by Allen Hines with Nebraska SPF of Lincoln using ultrasonic equipment. Special premiums will be awarded by donors to the 4-H Livestock Premium Fund. Expenses were sponsored by the Dawson County 4-H Foundation and the Dawson County Agricultural Society.

4-H ACHIEVEMENT APPLICATION DUE OCTOBER 2ND

The 4-H Achievement Application is an organized presentation of what has been learned and accomplished in 4-H. When accurately and care­fully assembled, it is a useful tool for determining progress and personal growth.

According to Andrea Nisley, UN-L Exten­sion Educator, the 4-H Achievement Application for awards recognition is due October 2nd in­ the Dawson County Extension Office before 5:00 p.m. Ribbons to all who com­plete and turn in an application by dead­line. The Dawson County Extension Office has the 2023 direction guidelines to help 4-H'ers start or update the awards applica­tion or they are available on the Dawson County website:

The 4-H Council will review the 4-H application and make selec­tions. 4-H'ers will be recognized at the 4-H Achievement Barbecue on Sunday, October 15, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lexing­ton Middle School.

The 4-H program is an educational system that uses a wide variety of delivery methods to reach a diverse youth audience. Motivating youth and adults is enhanced with a comprehensive program of recog­nition. For some 4-H'ers, regularly attending meetings or particip­ating in an educational experience is an accomplishment, worthy of recognition. Some young people are challenged by setting their own personal goals and working to achieve them. Others are challenged by working to achieve pre-established standards of excellence. Some are motivated by a highly structured experience that leads to champions or other single awards.

These Dawson County 4-H’ers received the following ribbon placings at the Nebraska State Fair in the 4-H Contest, Fashion Show Contest, Culinary Challenge Contest, Horticulture Contest, W**d and Grass ID Contest, Tree ID Contest, Insect ID Contest, and Special Awards, according to Andrea Nisley, UNL Extension Educator; Sarah Sivits, UNL Extension Educator; and Mike Wolff, Extension Assistant.



4-H FASHION SHOW

Dawson County 4-H’ers Karla Herrarte (L), Sydni Ringenberg (L), Melissa Montano (K) and Aven Zimmerman (O) competed in the 4-H Fashion Show. Karla and Sydni received purple ribbons showcasing their constructed garments. Melissa and Aven received a purple ribbon showcasing their consumer skills with a purchased garment. Karla Herrarte received the 2023 Nebraska Make It With Wool 4-H Fashion Show plaque given in memory of Alice Doane, past State Director of the Nebraska Make It With Wool for 28 years.



4-H DESIGN GALLERY EXHIBITS

Wesley Thompson (L) STEAM Clothing 3 - A Stitch Further (navy blue wool military coat); and Karla Herrarte (L) - STEAM Clothing 3 - A Stitch Further (crimson red wool coat and black/cream/ red plaid wool dress); were selected for exhibition in the “4-H Design Gallery”.



4H CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION

Wesley Thompson (L) received the 2023 Nebraska Make It With Wool 4-H Construction Best of Show plaque for his Navy Blue Wool Military Coat. The award was in memory of Alice Doane, past State Director of the Nebraska Make It With Wool for 28 years.



4-H CULINARY CHALLENGE CONTEST

Mollie Spradlin (C) and Paige Walahoski (O) received a purple ribbon and ranked 3rd in the 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest using the challenge ingredient sunflower in their “4-H Girls Party Picnic”.



4-H HORTICULTURE CONTEST

The following Dawson County 4-Her’s participated in the State 4-H Horticulture Identification Contest. Intermediate Division blue ribbon winners were Mollie Spradlin (C), Cassidy Reiman (C), and Brooklyn Reiman (C). Brooklyn Reiman placed 5th and Cassidy Reiman placed 7th. The Intermediate team of Mollie Spradlin, Cassidy Reiman, and Brooklyn Reiman ranked 1st overall. In the Senior Division, Reiker Spradlin (C) received a blue ribbon with Carson Reiman (C) and Wesley Thompson (L) receiving a red ribbon. Reiker Spradlin placed 9th.



4-H W**D AND GRASS IDENTIFICATION CONTEST

The following Dawson County 4-H’ers participated in the State 4-H W**ds & Grass Identification Contest. Intermediate Division blue ribbon winners were Cassidy Reiman (C) and Brooklyn Reiman (C). Mollie Spradlin (C) and Wesley Thompson (L) received red ribbons. Cassidy Reiman placed 7th and Brooklyn Reiman placed 8th. The intermediate Team of Mollie Spradlin, Cassidy Reiman, and Wesley Thompson ranked 3rd overall. In the Senior Division, blue ribbon winners were Reiker Spradlin (C) and Carson Reiman (C). Reiker Spradlin placed 9th and Carson Reiman placed 10th. The Senior Team of Reiker Spradlin, Carson Reiman, and Brooklyn Reiman ranked 1st Overall.



4-H TREE IDENTIFICATION CONTEST

The following Dawson County 4-H’ers participated in the State 4-H Tree Identification Contest. In the Intermediate Division, Brooklyn Reiman (C) received a red ribbon and placed 3rd . Wesley Thompson (L) received a red ribbon and placed 5th. Reiker Spradlin (C) received a red ribbon and placed 8th in the Senior Division.



4-H INSECT IDENTIFICATION CONTEST

The following Dawson County 4-H’ers participated in the State 4-H Insect Identification Contest. Cassidy Reiman (C) placed 4th in the Intermediate Division receiving a purple ribbon. Carson Reiman (C) placed 8th in the Senior Division receiving a red ribbon.

Every 4-H exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair is unique and special in its own way. However, some really stand out in a crowd! The following list recognizes individuals in the various 4-H Exhibit Hall departments that drew special attention.

2023 DAWSON COUNTY STATE FAIR LIVESTOCK EXHIBIT RESULTS

For some Dawson County 4-H’ers, the best way to spend a late summer weekend is to compete in livestock shows at the Nebraska State Fair. Dawson County beef, sheep, swine, and rabbit traveled to Grand Island with their owners to compete against the rest of the best from across the state, according to the Dawson County Extension Office.



Here are the details of the 2023 State Fair Livestock competitions:



Beef Showmanship – In Senior Beef showmanship, Jaelin Wolfinger (L) and Jacie Wolfinger (L) received a purple; blue ribbons were awarded to Lizzie David (B) and Trina Pearson (B); In Intermediate Showmanship Bristol McConville (L) received a blue.



Market Beef – In the Market Beef Show, Crossbred Steers, Trina Pearson (B) received a blue ribbon; Lizzie David (B) received a purple ribbon, 2nd place for Registered Steers Shorthorn. Lizzie David (B) received a 4-H Beef Special Awards, Reserve Champion Market Beef Shorthorn. Lizzie David (B) also received a 4-H Beef Special Award, Reserve Champion Shorthorn Steer.



Breeding Beef – In the Breeding Beef Show, Jacie Wolfinger (L) received a purple ribbon and 2nd in the Angus Heifer Calves Calved Sept./Oct. 2022; Jaelin Wolfinger (L) received a purple ribbon in Angus Heifer calved May/June 2022; Trina Pearson (B) received a blue ribbon for commercial Breeding Heifer; Jacie Wolfinger (L) received a purple ribbon for Mainetainer yearling Heifers calved March/ April 2022. Jacie Wolfinger (L) also received a 4H Beef Special Award, Reserve Champion Angus Breeding Heifer.



Sheep – In Senior Sheep Showmanship, Jaelin Wolfinger (L) was awarded a purple ribbon, and Trina Pearson (B) was awarded a blue ribbon. In the Market Sheep Natural Color Market Lamb division, Jaelin Wolfinger (L) was awarded a purple ribbon; Trina Pearson (B) was awarded a Red Ribbon, in the Market Sheep, Hampshire Market Lambs division, Jaelin Wolfinger (L) was awarded purple ribbons.



Rabbits – In the Intermediate Rabbit Showmanship division, Neala McCall (O) received a blue ribbon, Neala McCall (O) received a Red Ribbon in the Breeding Rabbit, Mini Lop Sr. Doe division.



Fitting Contest – The following 4-H’ers competed in the 2023 State Fair Fitting Contest. The Crew team members were Jacie Wolfinger (L) from Dawson County and Abby Stallbaumer and Emma Stallbaumer both of Custer County, they made it to the finals. The Bovine Barbers team members were Bristol McConville(L) and Jaelin Wolfinger (L) both from Dawson County and Cooper Lindstrom from Phelps County.
