Thank you for allowing 20 pics a post, Finland 🇫🇮 is so beautiful to bikepack through, we can’t narrow it down! From Oulu to Äkäslompolo, our last stretch was stunning. We rode packed trails through quiet forests, camped lakeside, resupplied in small towns and stopped to see friends. The trees are shrinking as we head north and the reindeer are now everywhere 🦌 Finland has been exactly what we needed after our bike tour through Africa 🌍

🇫🇮 NEW Tour, NEW Adventure! We’ve been hoping to ride through Finland (Ville’s home country) for a long time + finally the stars align 🌟 Since our Tour of Africa was cut short (protests in Kenya), it was perfect timing to cycle through Finland! Come join us for the next adventure…Nordics Full-Throttle 🚴🏽‍♀️🚴

That’s a wrap for our Africa Tour! What an adventure it was 🚴🏽‍♀️🚴‍♂️ We rode through 8 countries: South Africa 🇿🇦 Lesotho 🇱🇸 Eswatini 🇸🇿 Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 Botswana 🇧🇼 Zambia 🇿🇲 Malawi 🇲🇼 + Tanzania 🇹🇿 over the past 5 months and covered 3,700 miles!

We camped on farms, in yards, schools, beaches, and stayed with hosts + guest houses. We ate meat pies, fried chicken, ox tail, fat cakes, bananas, avocados, seafood and LOTS of cornmeal (a staple in every country we passed through). We experienced heat waves 🥵 (100*F/38*C), freezing 🥶, droughts (Zambia + Malawi are both in a state of emergency), food shortages and load shedding (power outages). We rode on dirt, pavement and roads littered with potholes, but mostly, the drivers were kind to us. We experienced some of our best days as well as our worst. We struggled with our gear, broken tent poles, multiple tires, water filter, pedals, camera, chargers + so many other things to list. Through it all, we made friends, shared smiles and were welcomed by the African people. We are so grateful to all of you that have cheered us on, reached out, supported and followed our journey. Without you, we would never have made it. ❤️

We’d hoped to ride from Cape Town to Cairo, but it’s not safely possible at this time. We can’t ride through Egypt without a police es**rt + booked hotels, Sudan + Ethiopia are in civil war, and now there are protests in Kenya. Tanzania is the end of the line for us. Next, we will fly to Rwanda to see Ville’s cousins and then????

Making our way through Malawi 🇲🇼 We travel by bicycle to go slowly + meet people. Malawi is densely populated + we have been overwhelmed by the amount of attention we are getting. “Muzungu” + “give me money” is what we hear constantly throughout the day as kids chase us from village to village. We are meeting nice people + grateful for the adventure. We spent Ville’s birthday in a brothel + made up for it once we arrived at Mushroom Farm Eco Lodge up in the mountains above Lake Malawi. Next, we head towards Tanzania 🇹🇿

🇲🇼 Lots more Malawi fun! We had to choose to ride along Lake Malawi or to take a “more adventurous” mountain route through the country. Can you guess which route we chose? 😀🙌

Also, last week we passed a massive gathering of people in a village, music blaring, cars everywhere (rare to see here), lots of black clothing + somber faces. We found out later, that the Vice President of Malawi had died in a plane crash + we had ridden through the beginning of the funeral/grieving ceremony. 😐😢

Great start for Malawi 🇲🇼 We camped last night in the yard of two really sweet girls and their mom (or grandma?) They spoke very little English so time was spent smiling, playing with the babies + local kids. Setting up our tent grew quite the crowd of young moms and their babies. Before dark, we watched neighborhood kids come to collect water from the well and carry it away on their heads. We shared snacks + lots of smiles 😊

🇧🇼 Botswana 🐘 We took a detour through Botswana to ride a stretch known as the “elephant highway” in the hopes of seeing wildlife. We met some really nice people, camped in yards, pushed some long days (80 miles/130k), suffered in the heat (101*F/38*C) + spotted lots of animals! We saw elephants, wild dogs, warthogs, giraffes, kudu, impala, hyenas + water buffaloes. Luckily, we only heard the roar of lions 🦁 We are so jazzed that our friend, , joined us in Nata for part of our journey north. It’s thanks to her that she captured the 📸 of the elephant crossing the road behind us + also that we are hydrated + fed along this stretch 💧🍔

🇸🇿 A few weeks ago, Ville and I rode into Mbabane, Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) and discovered Ville’s pedal was broken. We found a hardware store where we met Thulani, a kindhearted former cyclist (prior to injury) who spent multiple days on his own time fixing Ville’s pedal. He wouldn’t take money and only wanted to help us along our journey. Thank you Gule Thulani Fortune for your kindness ❤️

😊Wanted to share this story of a kind family who let us camp on their farm yesterday.

🇿🇦We rode into Morebeng, South Africa, at the end of a long day of climbing in the heat and after searching for a place to camp, a farmer was called and his caretaker (Thys) showed up in his car 🚗 We followed Thys and his wife, Sonica, to the farm just outside of town and they showered us with kindness. Their kids drew us pictures, helped us set up our tent and made us fat cake sandwiches. Before we left, Thys gifted Ville a pair of headphones to replace his broken ones. We are so grateful for people + families like these that make our journey so special ❤️

Thank you Thys, Sonica, Anika, Deandre, Juandré for letting us stay with you, for spending time with us + all your kindness. ❤️

🚴‍♀️ Attention + : Go visit Lesotho!🇱🇸 through this country has been a touring cyclist’s dream. Beautiful scenery, great roads (for cycling), slow + respectful drivers, people waving at us all day, food stalls everywhere + kind people. Hey, we even met a few chiefs! Before we could camp, we were taken to the town chief, where we were given permission to camp. ⛺️ AND, we almost got to meet the King 👑 😮

And now, back to South Africa…🚴🏽‍♀️🚴‍♂️

🇱🇸 We ❤️ Lesotho, Africa! What an experience! We camped in Zastrom, South Africa, rode to Wepener + entered Lesotho through the Van Rooyens Gate. Immediately, we were inundated with kindness. Nearly every person we passed either waved, called out, whistled, gave a thumbs up + smiled 😊 Unlike South Africa, there are no fences, herders move the animals, less traffic, cars drive slower, lots more people walking along the roadside + more food stalls! 😋

📸
1. Ville balancing a watermelon on his head while chatting with a roadside farmer who was selling watermelons 🍉
2. Our fist morning riding in Lesotho, we passed friendly farmers with oxen 🐂
3. Jerry + Ithabeleng selling “fat cakes” at Makb’s Grill & Pizza near Mafeteng, Lesotho 🇱🇸
4. They smiled + waved so excitedly as we passed we had to stop to meet them + see what they were selling. 🥮
5. Camping in Zastrom, South Africa 🏕️
6. Mathapelo + her family let us camp in her yard. Mathapelo took Ville to meet the chief of Morija to ask permission to camp. They sat in chairs and discussed it + he gave us permission to camp anywhere. Then, Mathapelo offered us her yard. ❤️
7. When we left, Mathapelo gave us big hugs 🥰
8. Breakfast of Liphaphatha “bread” from a roadside woman.
9. We told her she had the best liphaphatha bread in Lesotho 🇱🇸

🇿🇦 Although it’s been abnormally hot 🥵 + dry 🏜️ in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, the people we meet continue to shower us with kindness. ☺️
📷
1. Hanging out with students + new friends at Mamma’s Kitchen in Sterkstroom.
2. Arman, owner of Mamma’s Kitchen, invited us + gave us sandwiches + cold drinks. We returned for dinner + shared fries with the kids. 🍟
3. With temps nearing 100F, we have been up by 4am to beat the heat. Leaving Tarkastad.
4. Camping at Valschfontein Caravan Park. 🏕️
5. Stayed at Stepping Stones B&B in Tarkastad + Dave, Cathy, Lara, Joanna + Jonathan invited us for dinner. ♥️
6. Jonathan helped Ville oil chains + do bike maintenance 🚲
7. Although we start early, the heat still finds us 🥵
8. Resting in the shade of a church in Sterkstroom before continuing on in the evening.
9. Although the dirt roads get us away from traffic, lots of them have some pretty horrible washboard 😬
10. Renier, at the gas station in Jamestown, gave us some electrolytes + snacks after we bought some meat pies for lunch + dinner. 🥧

Thank you for following our journey, writing to us, telling us how much we are missed, supporting us + loving us. We are sharing our story in the hopes it inspires others to do great things! Be brave, be bold + always be kind ❤️ Keep on keepin’ on ya’ll 🚴🏽‍♀️🚴‍♂️

🇿🇦 Principal Desmond at the Bracefield Primary School, was kind enough to let us camp last night. About 20 kids travel 150 kilometers from their village + stay at the school all week. They helped us put together our tent, blow up mattresses, filter water + played with us until dark. This morning, we gave rides to each kid on our bikes (most of them couldn’t touch the pedals) and hope it plants a seed of curiosity for adventure. They all waved at the fence as we rode away 🚴🏽‍♀️🚴‍♂️ It completely warmed our hearts ❤️ To have these experiences are why we are the world 🌍
