What great news pre-Xmas. This will make travel a lot easier sth of Kaitaia.
We'll be fully reopening State Highway 1 through Mangamuka Gorge on Friday 20 December 2024 at 12:01am.
We're really excited and thrilled for Northland that we'll be reopening SH1 before Christmas. We're making great progress and roadworkers are keeping up a great working pace as we get closer to reopening the road.
In the past month we've ticked off some big achievements:
• We've completed all 1337 piles
• We've finished installing 80% of the ground anchors
• We've completed repairs on nine of the 16 critical slips, having just finished repairs on three further critical slip sites
• We're in the final stages of repairing the remaining seven critical slips, including installing safety barriers, drainage systems, and rebuilding the road surface.
We'll be back after the holidays to put finishing touches on the road – the road will remain open but we'll have some sections under reduced speed limits or under stop/go traffic management. We're finalising the details of the remaining work and we'll update you next month.
