Entries are now open to the 2024 Surf Coast Century that will be held on Saturday, 21 September in Anglesea along the Great Ocean Road region of Victoria!

The event offers a 100km solo or relay, and a revamped 50km, and the 2024 edition is also hosting the Australian Ultra Runners Association (AURA) Long Course Trail National Championships for the 100km race.

It’s often referred to as a bucket-list event for ultra trail runners, thanks to the welcoming environment on and off the course.

This weekend, New Zealand elite trail runners Ruth Croft, Daniel Jones and Scotty Hawker will tackle the sport’s most prestigious and challenging race, the UTMB® in Chamonix, France.

The 2023 UTMB Mont-Blanc (1-3 Sept) will feature arguably the best start list in the race’s 20-year history, with Kiwis Croft, ranked second in the women’s field, Jones, and Hawker among those in contention for the coveted title of UTMB champion.

Croft will line up on Friday knowing that if she races to the best of her ability a shot at the title is within her grasp, though she’ll have to overcome the formidable American and number one ranked runner Courtney Dauwalter who holds three of the most prestigious 100-mile titles in the sport – UTMB, Western States, and the Hardrock 100.

“They say UTMB is the Superbowl for trail runners,” she said. “UTMB always brings together a really competitive field.”

For Jones, this weekend’s UTMB will be by far his biggest test to date – and his debut at UTMB.

“For me this is amazing,” he said. “I've really had the best year of running in my life, with a win at TUM102, fifth at Western States and now getting to be here and experience the mecca of ultrarunning.”

Hawker, will line up alongside countryman Jones in the UTMB race. Hawker’s results over the past couple of years have been a mixed bag, including a DNF at last year’s UTMB, but his class is irrefutable. The Christchurch runner has previously placed third in the UTMB race in 2019 and second in the CCC race in 2021.

The UTMB race begins on Friday afternoon local time, 4am NZT on Saturday morning, with the first runner across the line expected a day later, estimated around 12:45am NZT on Sunday morning.

UTMB has stolen the hearts of trail runners all over the world, and despite the effort required to get there, Aussies are no exception with many tailoring their race schedule to collect running stones and the appropriate UTMB index to put them in contention.
The 20th edition of the event THIS WEEK will host the first ever UTMB World Series Finals, and will see the biggest Australian contingent to ever skip along the Chamonix trails, with 265 Aussies running across 8 events during the week.
In the elite field (ranked via UTMB index) you can watch out for the following athletes:
UTMB: Lucy Bartholomew (our front cover gal for TRM48 out on shelves now!), Anna McKenna and Emily Gilmour-Walsh
CCC: Kellie Angel, Erika Lori, Patricia McKibbin, Blake Hose
OCC: Ben Duffus
TDS: Meghann Coffey, Sarah Tapp

But there are many more ‘underdogs’ who have had some incredible performances back home without the UTMB index to put them in the official elite line up, including Sarah Ludowici (UTMB), Claire O’Brien-Smith (UTMB and featured in TRM48), Amy Lamprecht (UTMB), Matt Crehan (UTMB), Shane Johnstone (UTMB), Majell Bakhausen (UTMB and interviewed in TRM48), Mikey Dimuantes (CCC), Bastien Missud (CCC), Meagan Brown (CCC), Lou Clifton (CCC), Charlie Hamilton (OCC), Brodie Nankervis (ETC) amongst others.

The mountains are big, the weather is ominous, but we know everyone will do us proud. We hope those watching at home can have some fun too.
