The longest running short film festival in Malaysia. Mini in scale, big in ambition! It is the turning point when new possibilities are encountered and found.

Stepping into its 18h edition this year, Mini Film Festival is Malaysia’s longest-running short film festival in Malaysia. In responding to COVID-19, it became the first onsite film festival converted to an online festival in Malaysia. It is a real-scale project that involved more than 2200 registered participants in 2021 for all the film-related events organised under Mini Film Festival. Conducte

d in collaboration with international partners ranging from regional film festivals and media partners to NGOs, cultural bodies and government agencies, the festival aims to provide well-curated film-related events such as talks, workshops, film screenings and discussion to inculcate the love for film arts. This year, the organiser plans to incorporate the other art forms into its festival by having carefully curated art exhibition and sharing sessions conducted concurrently with the film festival in a hybrid format. By doing so, the festival will serve as a platform that brings all other arts together under one theme, named "Revival". It is a departure of the previous year’s theme, “In Time of Crisis”, when we see COVID-19 has upended the creative industry and impacted so many filmmakers and artists whose livelihoods rely heavily on their day-to-day job. However, we believe a crisis is an opportunity to renovate what has to be done. Hence, a revival in the post-pandemic era, we hope. Thus, with the theme of this year's festival, "Revival", let's explore the infinite possibilities of inspirations that films and arts could bring us. See you in the festival, soon!

Dear Movie Enthusiasts, we are happy to announce that the short film "Phone Call Man Woman," directed by Lim Kean Hian, will be screened at our much awaited Duduk and Tonton 5 event.

Director’s Bio:
Kean Hian's short film "LANGIT BUDAK BIRU" received a Best Live Action Short Film nomination at the 2019 Golden Horse Awards. His feature film project, "VERY VERY IMPORTANT FUNERAL," was nominated for the 2021 Golden Horse Film Project Promotion and later selected for mylab in 2022, where it garnered a Special Mention award.

“Let's meet the Visionaries: The Creative Geniuses Who Made It All Happen “🔥

They are Dr. Abdul Riezal Dim, Dr. Fazmi Hisham, and Mr. Gregory Wee Lik Ho who
brought "it" to life initially. It was then taken over by the current director of the festival,
Mr. Yow Chong Lee.

It is also effectively accomplished by cinematography students who draw inspirations
from the reverberations of Southeast Asian film festivals.

Directors Bio:
Ekin Kee Charles is a filmmaker and creative content writer from Kota Marudu Sabah. She is an
alumnus of And… Action! Asia 04, the Grand Prize Winner at the BMW Shorties 2019 and is the
recipient of the Han Nefkens Foundation Loop Barcelona Video Art Production Grant 2022. Her
works often discuss the subject of identity exploration set against unique cultural backdrops.

Kumbang by Gwai Lou

Director Bio:
Gwai Lou (鬼佬) means “Foreign devil”, it is a common Cantonese slang for Westerners. People used to call me this as a joke when I first arrived in Malaysia. Eventually it became my name. I am a Malaysian-based filmmaker of Spanish origins.

Our Story

Mini Film Festival is the longest running short films festival in Malaysia, with the motto “Mini in Scale, Big in Ambition”.

Organised by the Cinematography Programme, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Mini Film Festival aims to celebrate filmmakers with daring and creative approaches in telling story matters both to themselves and the society as a whole.

Apart from the festival, frequent film screenings (Duduk dan Tonton, literally “Sit and Watch”), workshops, talk/ sharing sessions programmed by Yow Chong Lee (festival programmer) are also being organised for film and arts community in Sarawak. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organiser has also migrated the festival and all its subsequent events entirely online. Hence, making it the first Malaysian onsite film festival that migrated online entirely.
