*Kwara Gov hands 1,000 life jackets to Patigi, restates commitment to safe water travel*

• Abdulrazaq meets traditional rulers on security, people’s well-being

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Thursday handed at least 1,000 life jackets to the people of Patigi to prevent drowning and death in the event of a boat mishap during water travel.

AbdulRazaq handed the life jackets to the Etsu Patigi Alhaji Umar Bologi II, shortly after a meeting the Governor had with some first class monarchs who had come to brief him on some issues of security and general well-being of the people.

The Governor said a similar gesture will be extended to Edu local government and other riverine areas to promote safe water travel in the state.

"This is only a phase of donation of lifejacket to people of Patigi Local Government. We will also move to Edu Local Government to make sure we have adequate life-saving equipment for our people along the banks of River Niger and within the riverine communities in the state. It is a continuous process and health and safety issue concern being addressed," he said.

The brief ceremony was attended by the state Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Jide Asonibare; Vice Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs and Etsu Patigi Alhaji Umar Bologi II;
Olofa of Offa Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye; Olupo of Ajase-Ipo Oba Ismaila Yahaya Alebiosu; Emir of Kaiama Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar; and Olomu of Omu Aran Oba AbdulRaheem Oladele Adeoti.

Etsu Bologi II thanked AbdulRazaq for taking “wonderful steps” to protect his subjects, adding that this will go a long way to avert recurrence of boat mishap in the area.

"On behalf of myself and entire people of Patigi Emirate Council, we want to sincerely thank His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for this wonderful donation of lifejacket to our people at riverine areas who are mostly farmers and fishermen," he said.

"Thank you very much, Your Excellency, and we pray Almighty Allah to guide and protect you and continue to uplift your government and see you succeed.”

The Government had recently sent a team to the Lagos Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) as part of its ongoing efforts to boost water travel and safety.

Remarks by His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON at the inauguration of the committee on palliatives on August 22, 2023 in Ilorin, Kwara State

Protocols

Our gathering this afternoon is to enable me to formally inaugurate members of this important committee on food palliatives. As you are aware, our administration has rolled out multiple initiatives to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal. Quite a number of other interventions have also been introduced by the Federal Government in this regard.

It is important to clarify that food palliatives are only a stopgap measure to show empathy and reach out to the people, especially the most vulnerable ones among us. It is not the only step the government has taken since the removal of fuel subsidy. Government is committing huge resources to hasten mass production and use of gas-powered vehicles nationwide as well boost agricultural productivity, manufacturing, and small and medium scale enterprises. We are in this together, and I plead that we work together as one people bounded by one destiny to get over this current challenge.

Madame chairman, Your Royal Highness, and distinguished senior citizens, we have set up this committee to make the process of distributing the palliatives as nonpartisan, transparent, participatory and credible as humanly possible. We trust your judgment and commitment to make the palliatives to reach the nearest and farthest corners of our state.

The terms of reference for this assignment will be handed to the chairman and distinguished members of the committee.

I want to thank you most sincerely for accepting to serve our people in this capacity. I pray God to bless you all.

On that note, I have the pleasure of inaugurating the Kwara State Palliatives Committee.

Thank you.

*NURTW hails Kwara Gov on security matters, seeks govt’s support*

· Union praises Gov for being pro-masses

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s handling of security matters, protection of lives and properties, and his commitment to the welfare of the masses is impressive, Nigeria’s foremost road transport union leaders said on Thursday.

The commendation soon triggered loud chants of four-plus-four from hundreds of members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), a coded language recommending the Governor for another term of four years in office.

Paying a courtesy visit on the Governor in Ilorin, the state chairman of the NURTW Comrade Abdulrazaq Ariwoola said: “we commend Your Excellency’s effort as regards the security of the state which allows Kwara to continue to be in harmony despite the happenings across the nation. As we implore you to put in more efforts to see to the total freedom of the state, we pray that Almighty Allah shall continue to back you up in all your endeavours.”

Ariwoola meanwhile appealed to the government to support the union with loan facility and give it more voice when decisions affecting the transport sector are made, saying the union appreciates the administration’s investment in road and other basic amenities.

He also applauded the state government for creating an enabling environment for NURTW to operate in the state capital and across the 16 local government areas of the state.

Responding to the remarks of the NURTW, the Governor commended the strategic roles the union and other Kwara stakeholders played in his victory during the 2019 governorship ballot and said the huge support explains his focus to satisfy the masses with projects directly touching their lives.

AbdulRazaq then requested the union to appoint a committee that would interface with the government on its requests.

“This administration will not neglect members of the transport sector. We know your role in the economy and we will give the support you need within available resources. So, let us have the list of members of the committee from your end that will work with us and fashion out modalities to offer assistance to members of NURTW,” according to the Governor.

AbdulRazaq however expressed concerns over the rising motor accidents on Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road, urging leaders of transport unions to up their enlightenment campaigns against excessive speed.

“We are fixing old and constructing new roads across the state. I must also commend President Muhammadu Buhari for the construction of Jebba-Mokwa road. It is one of the best roads in Nigeria now. But I want to appeal to leaders of transport unions to caution their members against excessive speed. The rate of accidents on the road is alarming,” he said.

"We have received complaints from FRSC and hospitals on the rising cases of accidents on the road and I want to appeal to all of you, including other road users, to be conscious on the road so as to avert accidents."
