You have a unique combination of skills, specialties, education, and experience that makes you a unicorn at something.

Figuring that out is what makes your customers say, “Wow! You’re just what I’ve been looking for.”

Ron Reich shared this on our conversation for the Go-to Gal podcast and it is too true! Most people don't realize how this combination of skills and expertise makes them unique.

Putting that out there could be the beginning of a new business.

Or it could be that you’ve been in business a while and don’t know where your real magic is.

Have you ever seen the movie, Failure to Launch?

It’s a cute, early 2000s era rom-com where the charming Sarah Jessica Parker runs a business helping people like the handsome but emotionally stuck Matthew McGregor take action to get a move on with their lives. She just happens to be secretly hired by their parents to do it. 😆

The men in this movie have all this potential, but they just don’t see it until SJP comes along and inspires them to take a second look at themselves and what they can do.

Doesn’t SJP sound like the BFF we all need???

Think about that friend you know who lets a boyfriend treat them like crap when really they could do so much better…

Or that other friend who’s brilliant and amazing but doesn’t believe she’s good enough for that next raise, promotion, or business idea.

While I was chatting with Kylie Hodges about visibility she brought up this point. It’s easy for us to see the potential in others, but we struggle to see the potential in ourselves.

And to get the visibility we want…

To stand up in front of our audience and 100% believe in what we’re saying…

We need to see our potential and be willing to step up to be seen for it.

Vision boards: yay or nay?

I have to confess…I’ve ditched mine. And it’s because of this →

By thinking about all the things you want…you’re thinking about all the things you don’t have. You are acknowledging a lack in your current life. And most times, that doesn’t feel so good.

All of a sudden, the goals and dreams you were so excited about can seem impossible to achieve. That resistance isn’t going to help you get to your vision any faster.

So what if we did things differently this year?

What if we were to focus on alignment and visualization that can bring you real clarity for what’s ahead?

What’s your new year goal-setting mood ⬇️

🥲 Hello, real life! Goodbye, goals. I have clients to take care of and things to do. Oh well.

🤔 I thought this goal was possible for me….but now I’m not so sure. How do people do this?!

😠 Ok, so everyone in my industry is achieving this goal. Why not me???

🤨 Uhhhhh, what goals?

Or maybe you’re a special unicorn and it’s all smooth sailing 😊 We ❤️ you too.

Whenever you set a goal, you might be in your mind saying, “Yes, that’s what I want! I can see it so clearly.” And then show up and you’re the same as you always were. That big disconnect can make it hard for us to move forward.

How are you supposed to achieve your goal when you’re working from a place of frustration? Sure, you could channel that energy as motivation, but sometimes it’s so discouraging.

All these feelings are totally normal and totally part of the journey. 😝

That may not make you feel better, but it should! You are not alone and you’re right in the middle of the goal-getting process just like the rest of us.

What’s really going to make a difference as you go after your goals is your state of mind. Committing to your goals is a little bit like getting engaged…

The day you get engaged, you’re committed to get married. There is something about getting engaging, starting to plan your wedding that flips a switch in your mind and you’re just planning on the wedding happening.

And if that was you in 2021...maybe it’s happened in a different way than you thought. 😬

But whatever the year, when you make that commitment to get married, you have a belief it’s going to happen. And that belief carries you through all the decisions to make it happen.

This anecdote stands out in my mind because I can still remember over a decade ago calling to confirm a venue would have a liquor license in time for my wedding. They said no they couldn’t guarantee they would have the liquor license that day just like they couldn’t guarantee I’d actually get married that day. 😂

Ok, I can laugh now, but I was livid back then. You would be too, right? 🙈

What I really want you to think about commitments is that it is the first step to achieving your goal. What if you committed to your goals in such a way that you just believed they were going to happen?

That kind of commitment will force you to get creative when obstacles come your way. Because it’s no longer about, “Can this happen?” It’s about, “How can I make it happen?”

Are you ever on Facebook and think, “Wow, I see ads for this ALL THE TIME. Facebook must really have my number.”

Well, I do and what I get to see nearly every time on log on are loads and loads of ads for digital products from online business owners of all kinds.

And of course, I’m curious about what people are doing so I click.

I’ll be the first to admit Facebook really knows what they’re doing.

But I’ve started to wonder. I see so many people doing digital products. Is this just a trend or is it here to stay?

So I called in a digital product expert Monica Froese and asked her this very question. Her answer:

Digital products are here to stay because only more people are going to be coming to the internet.

Ok, so that’s an answer I can get behind.

One of my biggest motivators is flow.

Getting into the flow, staying inflow, and just going with the flow. Because when I'm fighting the flow, it's everything is really freakin’ hard.

That everyday feeling keeps me going more than the idea of achieving an end result.

I recently had a conversation with Cass McCrory of Real Women in Business Podcast with Cass McCrory and she totally backed this idea of flow over effort.

Here’s a little preview at the goodness Cass had to share:

“You can go against the current or you can go with the current and go with the flow.

Flow, to me, is the opposite of effort.

Flow is saying I’m willing. I'm willing to go at that pace. I'm really curious about how it's going to go for me.

I suspect that will be much more joyful because all of my experience confirms that.”

Growing up, I may have been called a bleeding heart once or twice, or ten times. 😅

I was always thinking of ways to give back and overflowing with ideas of things I could do to help.

But I always thought of making money and giving back as two *separate* things.

Melody Pourmoradi is living proof that this doesn’t have to be the case…

We can marry the ideas of making money and giving back.
Your idea for social impact doesn’t necessarily have to be a non-profit.
We can give and also receive.

I’m grateful...but I want more.

How do these two things co-exist?!

I'm grateful for what I have, but at the same time, I'm putting something totally different on my vision board for the next year.

What I have and what I want feel drastically different. Does that mean I don’t want what I have? That I’m not grateful for it? Does that mean I should feel guilty for wanting bigger goals?

I should just be grateful for what I have, right?

At this time of year, we’re often thinking about growing our businesses and all the things that come with that.

So here’s what I want you to write down:

I can be grateful for everything I have and still want more.

Write it down, Gals.

You can have both.

Recognizing that is the key to getting on the path to more.

This may be something you’re thinking about unconsciously or not at all. As you bring attention to it, you’ll open up yourself to more that much easier.

I noticed very early that the way I talk about my business led to the way other people talked about my business.

Now sometimes you might run into the Negative Nancy who will do otherwise, but the people around you who are well-intentioned will follow your lead.

So if you downplay your business...that’s what other people will reflect on you.

When they say, “Oh, did you start a business?”

And you say, “Well, I don’t know. I’m trying this out. I was doing this, but now I’m looking at something else...”

The confidence and the excitement aren’t quite there, right?

Sometimes when we think of ~ segmentation ~ a negative connotation pops up in our minds.

But at its core, segmentation just means that not everyone’s the same.

When we recognize that, and apply it to our businesses, the outcome can be pretty cool.

We can actually take our list and break it down into who’s interested in what or who’s struggling with this and then we can create customized content for their individual needs.

One of the most exciting ways to do this, if I say so myself, is with a QUIZ!

Jessmyn thinks about quizzes in such a different way, I’m thrilled to share with you her ideas on unlocking the true value of this unique opportunity to get to know your audience.

“You’ve probably seen that quizzes can work as a lead magnet to grow your list and segment your leads….But it’s so much more than that.

The problem is, it might not speak to everyone on your list or only certain parts will apply to a specific person.

With a quiz, you’re inviting someone in with a question.

There’s this sense that you’re actually bringing it back to a one-on-one conversation. It’s a human-centered approach.”

“Don’t worry about getting a certification.”

“You don’t need a certification, just get out there!”

“Don’t waste your time on a certification. You know everything you need to.”

We hear a lot of the same advice when it comes to making a decision about certification and other education opportunities.

I’d like to shine a little light on the idea that this choice is personal and probably different for every single business out there.

On the Go-to Gal podcast, I chatted with Enneagram Nicole Saunders Coach about getting her certification (before we dove deep into all things Ennegram!). What I noticed with Nicole is that after she got her certification, her whole energy shifted.

“Yes, it's kind of a lot of money for certification. It's a piece of paper literally.

But I'm such a learner. I love absorbing knowledge. I want it to be 100% confident in what I’m sharing, teaching and guiding people through.

I have a background in higher education. I have a Master's in College Student Development. So I thought, ‘I don't need this.’

And then I was like, ‘You know what, I want this.’

Honestly, I'm so glad that I did. That might not be the best decision for everybody, but it was for me. I'm just so lit up by it.”

That energy. That is absolutely contagious.

It’s so good for us to share both sides of the certification debate. Because maybe you don’t need it. Maybe you’re good to keep going without it. Or you might be someone who enjoys the extra knowledge and extra boost it gives.

“If you’re experiencing imposter syndrome, you must not be doing well in your business.”

The truth is just the opposite. 😳

It’s when you’re getting outside of your comfort zone…

Pushing yourself to think bigger...

Having a lot of success…

Reaching that next level…

That’s when imposter syndrome comes up.

When you’re getting yourself into situations that stretch yourself, those imposter syndrome thoughts inevitably show up.

But when you’re playing it safe, sticking to the areas you’re already successful and keeping to your cozy little comfort zone, you’re going to be feel fine...but you might not doing as well as you could be.

If you’re fighting with imposter syndrome, you’re probably starting to look toward bigger and better things. Don’t let this mindset trap keep you from getting there.

Sometimes we think we need the perfect funnel. Or an expert marketing agency. Or an amazingly curated, crafted thing in order to market our offer.

But there’s a certain energy to going boots on the ground and getting really creative with your marketing.

When I chatted with Rebecca Minkoff for the Go-to Gal podcast I was inspired by her guerilla marketing side and how she literally went to the streets to get momentum and buzz going for her brand.

She said that kind of scrappiness came from having to do it all herself. (Shout out to you solopreneurs out there! You are in good company.)

Doing everything herself gave Rebecca the tactile feeling of building something that is so important as an entrepreneur.

She described the early stages of building a brand on her own like climbing a mountain with her bare fingers. That experience helped her build muscle and skills that translated into smarter decisions.

Can we all just give ourselves a pat on the back for those early-day struggles starting a business? You were building muscles, y’all!

Have you ever thought your current clients just wouldn’t pay if you raised your rates? You may be right. 👀

Your current audience might not want to pay higher rates for what you do. But that doesn’t mean you should just keep your rates low! You might just need to find a new audience.

The surprising thing is that an audience who will pay you more might actually look the same **on the outside** as your current audience.

They may still be course creators or entrepreneurs three years into their businesses or making 5k months. Whatever it is you market to. But their mindset or goals for their business may be drastically different.

That might mean wanting more or wanting less.

More money.
Less time at work.
More clients.
Less clients.
More team members.
Less offers.
