Book review (long read)...been a while đ
A book that makes you feel excited before you start and that excitement hasnât fizzled out by the time you finish? Well, that says a lot about the book.
Iâve read a lot of business books but none quite like this one. While books like Relentless (great book by Tim Grover by the way) for instance, oozed of masculine energy, Love What You Do has feminine scent all over it and I donât think itâs because the author is a woman, necessarily. Ok, maybe a little :)
This book is a huge fireball of inspiration and feel-goodness but before you think itâs all rainbows and daisies, Holly throws you a Holly Hack chuck-full of practical tips and actionable steps
While written with small businesses in mind, ANYONE can gain a ton from this book. Itâs really about having an entrepreneurial view and approach to work and life.
If youâre expecting a book that dives deep into the trenches of starting and scaling a small business, this isnât it. But thereâs certainly enough juice in it to set you off on your googling and/or youtube journey
And the hard copy of the book? An experience in itself!
Iâve been a fan of The Hurricane for years now. First fell in love with her first company Not On The High Street and then her podcast and then her weekly newsletter. She truly is an inspiration!

Gosh, this one cuts close to home.
The 2 questions Iâm hoping to address in tomorrowâs episode are: why we self-sabotage and how can we stop self-sabotaging.

My guest in tomorrowâs Episode is Steffy Uwaifo- a young millennial living outside Nigeria but making use of online resources available to us to put an arguably dying language on the international map
The dying language in question is the Edo language spoken by the Edo (or Bini) tribe- a minority ethnic group in Nigeria
Talk of a tiny niche market!
I first came across Steffy on youtube and found her teaching style and depth of knowledge of the Edo language ( In spite of the fact that she lives in Germany and has done so since her teens) fascinating
It was so important to me to share Steffyâs story with you because I wanted you to see what it was like to chase after the call in your heart no matter how niche or improbably it seems
Thereâs a reason you and only you hear that call

Itâs another book recommendation , guys! Check this one out!
This was another Gold Minds book club (the book club I facilitate) pick for last year. It was hands down one of my favourites, though more than half the book club members didnât share my sentiments. Thatâs cool. I donât mind folks disagreeing with me đ
So this is fair warning that you may feel the same. It is certainly not for everyone and not for the faint of heart.
Hereâs my review:
This is certainly not your average personal development book. The subject matter is uncomfortable, to say the least.
But maybe thatâs why books like these (and authors like Brene Brown) are necessary to talk about stuff we generally prefer to sweep under the carpet but really should talk about more
That being said, here my thoughts in a nutshell: I LOVED this book! Every page, every story, every âdaring greatlyâ suggested action...I loved it all. This is not an instructional manual. This is research-based enlightenment and a call to arms to âget into the arenaâ at the risk of ending up a bloodied, wounded mess but well and truly ALIVE!
It was certainly an eye-opener for me into how far Iâve come in my own healing process with shame and It was plain as day (at least to me) that I still have a lot of work to do..
But it also put me on high alert about something else that Brene highlighted in a couple of stories she shared in the book: It is the fact that we too are what I call âshame dispensersâ. And sadly most of us are walking through life unaware of this so it is mostly unintentional.
If Brene is correct, and empathy is truly the antidote to shame then we need to take intentional steps to develop our empathy muscles much, much more so that vulnerability is welcome.
Only then can we ALL truly create authentically, experience true change and make a difference in the lives around us.
I dare say thatâs what true love looks like

Bola Obileye puts the word âmulti-talented or âmulti-creativeâ to shame. She is a singer, songwriter, fashion eccentric with her own clothing line, an MC, brand specialist, business owner with her own product line and the list goes on and on
She was also on the just concluded Gordon Ramseyâs Future Food Stars on BBC
We speak about some of the many pots she has her hands in including being the award-winning founder of Jitterbug apple cider vinegar which is a gut health friendly soft drink alternative
Oh And guess what? Jitterbug recently won a huge nationwide listing across 630 Holland and Barrett Stores in the UK and 30 stores in Ireland.
Well, we talk about all this as well as how she manages to fit everything in and yet manages to find time to sleep let alone be a wife and mom :)

âMake Timeâ was one of our book club picks for 2021 and I recommended it in this weekâs episode of the Girl Unltd podcast for good reason.
If you feel behind in life itâs likely because you are comparing your journey with someone elseâs. Thatâs a distraction that will keep you stuck.
The antidote to that is to focus on those things that matter. This book contains tactics that will help with that
Iâve never read a book quite like it before, to be honest
Quick fire review (in bullet points):
# Their âMake Timeâ formula is genius
# Funny in parts- was lovely to see BOTH personalities of the authors shine through
# Creative- this book is a dream in hard copy. They are obviously skilled in getting peopleâs attention. No room for boredom, I promise!
# Easy read- I see this appealing to non-readers especially
# Presents alternative ways to âskin the same catâ- I loved seeing how the authors customised the systems they teach in the book for their individual lives.
# Itâs an ode to individuality and a playground for experimenting
# Contains some insider secrets on what itâs like to work for dem tech giants (in this case, Google and Youtube)

Now i know this post was focusing on women in music. But it got me thinking about the women- from different fields and interests- that I personally know too who feel behind in their lives.
