Yanomamo's opens the split with their track Dig 2 graves. This is a slow burn and moves at a creeping pace from start to near finish. While it may be slow, it's heavy as hell and packs a powerful punch. The band flawlessly deliver their sludge style vocals, which add a grimy swagger to the track. They range from a lower more guttural yet easily understandable style to a rawer, higher pitches semi shrieked style. Guitar wise as mentioned this is a slower one but despite that is chocked full of groovy downtuned fuzz. There are some stellar moments of bass work on the track which personally I can't get enough of. The segment between 4:00 and 4:45 is simply fantastic and should be heard by all sludge fans. What comes after is roughly a minute of high energy stoner doom groove where the track gallops through to it's conclusion. A perfect start to a stellar split.
The second half of the split sees a crushingly heavy track titled Griefhound from Slomatics. This is another slow burn and rather describe it as creeping I would call it lumbering due to the sheer weight of the guitars driving it forward. This is downtuned fuzz at its finest and when paired with the band's echoed semi-sung semi-shouted vocal style it makes for a captivating listen. Personally, I love this vocal style, it's similar to what Conan employees in that it isn't quite sung our shouted and yet feels more powerful in some ways than either alternative. There's something raw and primal about it and when paired with such crushing music it really gets the blood pumping. Unlike with Yanomamo you don't get those impressive bass moments as the band features two guitarists and no bass player. That's okay though because the highly downtuned and distorted guitar work on the album adds so much depth of sound that there honestly no need for bass. In fact I genuinely believed that there was bass on the album until I was corrected. Overall, this is some fantastic doom metal and a perfect second half to the split.
Overall, this is probably one of the most impactful two track splits I've heard in some time.
