Copy Editing/Line Editing/Substantive Editing:
This editorial service goes by a lot of names—copy editing, line editing, substantive editing. Copy editing includes reading closely and correcting spelling, incorrect word choice (e.g., shone instead of shown, your instead of you’re), grammar, punctuation, awkward sentences and phrasing, flow of paragraphs, presentation of dialogue, formatting, etc.
When I copy edit a manuscript, I work directly in your Word document using a built-in tool called Track Changes. This tool allows you to see each and every edit I make, even the addition or removal of spaces. When I return the edited manuscript to you, your next task will be to go through my edits and accept or reject them. Copy/Line Editing: $0.0045 per word … Minimum 12,000 words or $50.00
Content Editing:
I will look over your manuscript with a fine tooth comb. I will catch things like inconsistent character behavior/speech, style issues, thematic variances and readability. I will help you make sure everything makes sense, has believable dialogue and a plausible plotline. I will consider how to reword awkward sentences, while still maintaining the author’s voice, or how best to replace a word or phrase that is not what the author meant to use, noted redundancies, or an important inconsistency. Content editing involves the flow of a sentence, the sense of a paragraph and section, the organization of the work as a whole. Content Editing: $0.0055 per word … Minimum 12,000 words or $70.00
Proofreading:
I will check a reproduction of the finished product. The task is not revision, but correction — making sure that no typographical errors remain from the manuscript or were introduced in the production stage. New text, such as captions, for example, is often entered separately and may not have been edited. Alternatively, an element — anything from a letter to a paragraph or more — may have been inadvertently omitted or repeated, or misplaced. Because most text is copied and pasted directly from an electronic document, this mishap is unlikely but not unknown. Then there are esthetic issues: too many end-of-line hyphens in a row, or a word broken in half at the end of a column or page, or a widow (a very short final line of a paragraph at the top of a column). I will also check page numbers or recurring copy at the top or bottom of a page that identifies a section in a chapter or book title. I will make sure the font and type size and weight for one text element matches another element of that class. Proofreading: $0.0035 per word…Minimum 12,000 words or $40.00
The Whole Shebang:
Combines all three services into one. First: Copy Editing and Content Editing will be done to a manuscript and sent back to the author. The author will then make all of the changes needed and re-write sections that have been suggested need work. Once the author has finished this stage it is sent back to me. Second: a thorough Proofread will be done on the finished product/proof. (Please refer to the above explanations for each service to see what they entail)
The Whole Shebang: $0.0075 per word…Minimum 12,000 or $90
