Many voters believe Trump would handle the economy better than Biden has. Economists warn otherwise, Ronald Brownstein writes. https://theatln.tc/V28CQV2d

In an upcoming analysis shared exclusively with The Atlantic, Mark Zandi, the chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, forecasts that compared with current policies, Trump’s economic plans would increase the inflation rate and force the Federal Reserve Board to raise interest rates higher than they would be otherwise.

For worried economists, Trump’s plans to impose 10 percent tariffs on imported products from all countries and 60 percent tariffs on imports from China are among the most concerning of his policies. One study calculated that Trump’s tariffs would raise prices for consumers by about $1,700 annually for a middle-income family, Brownstein reports, with the cost for consumers rising about twice as high if domestic manufacturers increase their own prices on the goods that compete with imports. “When you make foreign wine more expensive, domestic manufacturers can sell their wine at a higher price,” one of the study’s co-authors told Brownstein. “Anything that is in competition with an import will also get more expensive.”

“Zandi said the only reason he does not anticipate prices rising even faster under Trump is that the Federal Reserve Board would inevitably raise interest rates,” Brownstein writes. “But those higher interest rates would come with their own cost: Zandi projects they would depress the growth in total economic output and personal income below current policy, and raise the unemployment rate over the next few years by as much as a full percentage point.”

It won’t be easy for Biden to convince voters to weigh the prospective risks of Trump’s policies more heavily than their retrospective judgments about prices under each man’s tenure, Brownstein continues: “But Biden may have no choice but to try. Raising awareness of the inflationary dangers in Trump’s agenda may be Biden’s best chance of winning a second look from the voters who are now moving toward the former president primarily because they remember gas, groceries, and other necessities costing less while he sat in the Oval Office.”

Many of this year’s first-time voters were too young to remember what Donald Trump was like in office, Russell Berman writes. https://theatln.tc/uSczMA7u

Joe Biden carried young voters by 24 points in 2020, but several recent surveys show that support plummeting, prompting a mix of panic and disbelief among Democrats. “Yet analysts who study the youth vote say the president’s standing with this key group isn’t nearly as bad as Democrats tend to think,” Berman continues. Surveys that specifically poll voters under 30 find Biden up by about 13 points among the cohort. “Pollsters place more trust in these findings because they sample a larger number of young people—and therefore have a smaller margin of error—than the surveys that have shown less favorable results for Biden.”

Still, that’s nowhere close to Biden’s 2020 lead. Pollsters attribute many of the president’s struggles “to an underappreciated finding: Most first-time voters know surprisingly little about Trump.” According to data from one Democratic firm, “fewer than half of registered voters under 30 said they had heard some of Trump’s most incendiary quotes, such as when he said there were ‘very fine people on both sides’ demonstrating in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 … Just 42 percent of respondents were aware that, during his 2016 campaign, Trump called for ‘a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.’”

Nevertheless, Biden has advantages that could help him win back young voters by the election.
