HAIL, RAVENS, HAIL! 🦅🙌

With utmost pride, we would like to congratulate the SPC Ravens as they emerged victorious at the recently concluded PRiSAA Basketball Games 2023 hosted by the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRiSAA) held from July 13 to 19, 2023, at Zamboanga City.

In an intense display of basketball prowess, the SPC Ravens, representing Region IV-A CALABARZON, basked in the glory of their well-deserved victory. Leading the charge for the SPC Ravens was the outstanding point guard, Mico Macaraya, who was awarded the title of Best Point Guard. Behind every successful team is a visionary leader, and the SPC Ravens were fortunate to have Francis Nati as their coach. With his tactical brilliance and ability to motivate and inspire the players, Coach Nati was recognized as the Best Coach of the PRiSAA Basketball Games 2023. While the shining star of the tournament was none other than John Gerald Olan Landig who was awarded as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition. Additionally, two other outstanding players, Kim Maligaya and Paul Caponpon, were both honored with the Mythical Five distinction.

At PAGES, we honor the passion and dedication of these promising student-athletes who will become the basketball stars of tomorrow. The whole CAS and SPC Community celebrate with you!

SPC STUDENTS EMBARK ON GEC EDUCATIONAL TRIP

On the 21st of April 2023, the department of the College of Arts and Sciences participated in an Educational Trip for GEC 5: Art Appreciation class. The trip was composed of hundreds of students from different courses.

On the day of the trip, students were able to travel through different and amusing itineraries, going first to Paco Park, followed by CCP, and in MOA, Intramuros, and the last itinerary at Rizal Park. They gained new experiences by immersing themselves in a mind-boggling dystopian play entitled "Nekropolis" performed by the Tanghalang Pilipino at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater).

In the adjournment of the students' journey from their trip, one of the students from BA Communication, Sophia Villa, left a remarkable statement, "Mainit man ang klima, masaya pa rin ang naging lakbay" marking her experience as an adventure, and a trip that despite a scorching temperature, no weather can stop them from having a great trip on the roads of learning.

ENCOUNTER

For once a ray of light appeared in the sky
despite flashes of a sudden storm came by
Avoided intersection but failed on your eyes
12th of December, I can still remember
how I made my move, how our fates intertwined
These ice cold walls of this heart of mine
As if non-existent, disappeared without a sign
To feel your gaze in a hall we're confined
twas more than grace than my holidays combined

My eyes stared at her, but you have my peripheral
You had me on the spot, now I have you in my mind
I was looking for something literal, liberal, conditional
You gave me something of a mystery, a path to find
In the looming end of our precious plots combined
We will meet again, in a story that we've just defined
I say grace for giving me an unexpected find
For this person I wish to spend my lovely youth behind

ROMEO AT JULIET

BLK. 4 LOT 13. Brgy. Alumbrado.

Old fashion way ako. Punta sa bahay. Meet the parents.

CAS CHAMPIONS: SHOWCASING TALENTS AND RAISING AWARENESS

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) 1st-year students did not fail to amaze their fellow CASmates by winning the Championship Award in the "Contemporary Hip-hop Dance Culminating Activity" on the 21st day of January 2023 held at the San Pablo Colleges' Gymnasium.

As part of their final requirements in Physical Activities Toward Health and Fitness (PATHFIT) headed by Prof. Edgardo Garingan Jr., 1st-year students from 11 college departments gathered in the gymnasium as early as 8 o'clock in the morning.

The aforementioned activity was participated by 37 freshmen from the CAS Department, along with other departments, who demonstrated their talent in dancing during their performances. The CAS students did not see it as a competition, but rather as an opportunity to spread awareness to others, showcasing their concept of “Recovery from Covid-19.” With their lively dance moves, they gave an exceptional dance performance that amused the audience. They could not hide their joy after the winners were announced at the end of the program, knowing that their hard work had paid off.

Their performance, however, would have been incomplete without their unique costume. "The phrase 'out of the blue' means the occurrence of COVID-19 that we did not expect. To 'be blue' or 'feeling blue' means people feel sorrow or despair because of the destructive effect of COVID-19. Though, may happy lightness din naman pong sini-symbolize ang vividness of blue,” says Mariella Ramirez, one of the CAS performers, when asked about the color and style of their costume.

Following their well-deserved victory, the 1st-year CAS students received heartfelt congratulations from their fellow CASmates and professors. Truly, the CAS Department has a lot of talented students and performers. Aside from excelling academically, they also excel in showcasing their talents.

SPC INAUGURATES COMM ARTS FEST

As an effort to highlight the importance of the General Education Curriculum (GEC) in the academe, the GEC Faculty along with freshmen students from the San Pablo Colleges (SPC), spearheaded the inauguration of Comm Arts Fest 2023, themed “Geared through Excellent Collaboration towards Significant Participation in the Community.”

The month-long celebration started with the slated Digital Competitions that aimed to showcase the talents of the GEC students of this year. Different departments gave their best effort in creating digital posters, career infographics, promotional videos, and short film trailers that promote their respective departments and the role of GEC as building blocks for a meaningful collegiate stint.

The submissions to the Digital Competitions were posted to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) page, as the general public voted for the best entries through their combined likes and reactions.

Comm Arts Fest 2023 culminated in a day of competition and recognition, as the festival's second round was held on the 6th of January at the Presidents’ Hall. Chosen students from their respective departments competed in Inspirational Speaking, Spoken Word Poetry, Extemporaneous Speaking, and GEC Quiz Bee Competitions.

SPC’s Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jocelyn Barradas graced the event, as she applauded the efforts done by the faculty and students led by the project chairperson, Prof. Merry Jaine Liwanag, in showcasing the importance of the four subjects under GEC as a strong foundation for a successful future. CAS Dean Prof. Natalia Nizel Briñas also attended the awarding ceremony.

This year’s GEC Comm Arts Fest is just a first step into the college’s deeper appreciation of the values and teachings that the four core subjects contribute to the students. Truly, it’s fun to study !

The 10th of January 2023 marks the first-ever Psychology Pinning Ceremony held at the Presidents' Hall of San Pablo Colleges. The pioneering ceremony laid out a new once-in-a-lifetime experience for the students of BS Psychology upon reaching their 3rd and 4th year of study.

Before the ceremony, everyone attended the 9 AM Mass at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel headed by Rev. Fr. Loretto Sotto, II. The momentous event commenced with the processional of Psychology students, Faculty, Board of Trustees, and Guest Speaker followed by the ardent doxology from 1st-year Psychology students Maria Queenie Ramos and Lyka Villa. Everyone paid their respect as the Philippine National Anthem and SPC Hymn played to grace the event with pride and honor. Thereafter, the College President, Dr. Ma. Socorro M. Eala, gave opening remarks, followed by the introduction of the guest speaker. The enthusiastic guest speaker, Ms. Denise Anne S. Valenzuela, RPm, gave her Pinning Ceremony address followed by the giving of a certificate of appreciation to the guest speaker by the Dean of College of Arts And Sciences, Prof. Natalia Nizel S. Briñas.

The students proceeded with their Pledge and Signing of Commitment led by Sikbulan Society President, Faith Elyse A. Dequito, followed by the distribution of nameplates and pins by the Psychology Adviser, Ms. Relaysa O. Briñas. SINE USISA: ASPIRING FILMMAKERS' GUIDE TO FILMMAKING

In preparation for the much anticipated Sine Usisa Short Film Festival, the Masugid na Alagad ng Sining at Organisadong Media (MASKOM) Society launched a series of production workshops: A Writer’s Desk: Sine Usisa Script Writing and Sine Usisa: Learning Video Editing 101 Seminar, aimed at preparing learners with basic skills in short film production. These workshops will be of great help to aspiring writers and video editors who would like to be in the field of the film industry.

Last October 15, 2022, A Writer’s Desk: Sine Usisa Script Writing Seminar was successfully conducted. The seminar was held at San Pablo Colleges’ Presidents' Hall. It was participated by 98 students from the Senior High School Department, College of Education (CED), and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Guest speakers, Mr. Leian Gary Laguador and Mr. Michael Angelo Valencia presented meaningful and practical ways of writing a screenplay.

Mr. Leian Gary Laguador demonstrated the technical format and elements of a screenplay. In the following portion of the seminar, Mr. Michael Angelo Valencia addressed how to construct a meaningful plot, clarifying for the audience the important points of a script's content. Mr. Valencia provided the students with a task to engage in as they connected sentences to create a whole story in the middle of his discussion.

On the second seminar, which happened on the 20th of October, the Sine Usisa: Learning Video Editing 101 Seminar was also executed successfully. Thirty-eight participants from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Computer Studies (CCS), and College of Nursing attended the seminar (CON). Guest speaker, Mr. Neil Henry Chumacera, generously shared his knowledge and expertise about filmmaking and video editing. He shared some of his outstanding works including his edited videos and films when he was in college. He noted the value of having the director sitting next to the editor when editing. He mentioned the significance of growing knowledge saying, "You need to invest time to learn something new, you cannot grow if you will only stick to what you already know."

At the end of the seminar, Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the guest speakers by MASKOM Society Adviser Prof. Merry Jaine Liwanag. Hosts Emmanuel Jairo Samar and April Anne Gomez gave a brief introduction to the three production teams--Dilag Studios, Realidad Production, and Black Circle Productions for their society’s upcoming "'Sine Usisa Short Film Festival" on December 13, 2022.

The two workshops were beneficial for those who desired to learn things specifically for their future profession. The guest speakers effectively conveyed the lessons to the audience, giving aspiring directors and scriptwriters the knowledge they need to progress toward their aspirations.
