After the smoke settles...

Last night our CatholicCare NT Ltyentye Apurte office caught ablaze and sustained serious fire damage.

Most importantly no one was harmed and no other properties took damage.

A massive thank you to our place-based staff Br Mark Fordyce and Diwa Bhusal who both showed amazing leadership on the ground in an extremely stressful situation and to Regional Manager Chamari Alaharuwan who did a power of work fielding phone calls and coordinating the response throughout the night.

Thanks also to the many organisations that pitched in to help keep the situation under control, including Madhu Panthee from Atyenhenge Atherre Aboriginal Corporation - AAAC, Lewis Gittoes from MacDonnell Regional Council, Rob Dreise from Ltyentye Apurte Catholic School and Don Blackman from the local Congress Clinic. Big shout-out to the local Police presence lead by Phillip and Agnes who helped keep the site secure and onlookers safe from harm.

And a big thanks to everyone from Ltyentye Apurte who called to provide updates and offer their support. It truly has been appreciated.

It was a great office with plenty of memories but our connection to community has always extended well beyond the building in which we are situated.

We are now in full Phoenix mode and from Monday onwards will be operating out of the old Op Shop/LtyentyeVision Studio space.

Warlpiri teenager Telaya Blacksmith, the first Australian woman to contest the 400m T20 at the Paralympic Games, has broken the Australian and Oceania record, running a lap of the track in 57.96 seconds, qualifying her for tomorrow morning's final! 🖤💛❤️

Telaya is originally from the small remote community of Lajamanu in the Northern Territory.

“I represent my family everytime I race and know that I am an inspiration for other young Aboriginal kids.” - Telaya told Paralympics Australia.

On July 17th, Traditional Owners joined the AAAC CEO and Board Members to sign the Local Decision Making Agreement with and NIAA Regional Manager Byron Matthews! This is the first step in empowering communities to have more say in how things happen in community!
