MIKE BARTOLO, FORMER LONG-TIME MANAGER OF CSU'S RESEARCH CENTER, IS CREDITED FOR CREATING STRAINS OF PUEBLO CHILI'S THAT LOCAL FARMERS PROFIT FROM - For this episode PBS headed through Southern Colorado and New Mexico to learn traditional and new techniques for growing and preparing chilies.

According to the show, there's a new strain of chili pepper being grown at the Arkansas Valley Research Center that infamous Mike Bartolo manages. Bartolo, interviewed in this show, is credited for bringing back certain varieties of peppers that go back over 100 years. He is a native of the Arkansas River Valley.

Bartolo was born and raised on a farm between the research center and Pueblo. After his graduate studies, he went home to the valley, where he has managed the research center since 2004. He has been an Extension vegetable crop specialist since 1991.

Local farms credit him for the varieties that he has developed have significantly benefited local farms which have grown tremendously in the decade in the Pueblo area. Whole Foods Markets in the Rocky Mountain Region, short of New Mexico, has switched to Pueblo Chili's because they like to support local products and they think Pueblo Chili is premier to Hatch.

Please avoid the area surrounding the Children’s Garden Early Learning Center located on San Juan Avenue. The DOW is on their way and the center has been advised and is currently on lockdown.
