“Spotted this phone booth on a rainy Hakata evening, with an umbrella left inside. I can’t help but start conjuring up a backstory.

The person might have left in a hurry, but to me it appears that whatever conversation they had in the phone booth left them in a state that didn’t care much for the rain. The umbrella wasn’t important anymore, staying dry wasn’t important anymore. Perhaps it was a break up, or finding out some bad news of a family member, whatever it was, the emotion was too overwhelming to care for anything else.

The phone booth, in its silence, witnessed a transition. One that had a person come in fearful of the rain, and left without a single care for it. Under the somber fluorescent light, the handset hung still, and the raindrops on the window pane almost put words to the emotions in the air. The telephone, reset back to its default screen, sits quietly in the dark, awaiting its next encounter. It may be several cold nights before it feels the warmth of another person again, and by then, who knows what story it will bear witness to?

Either that or someone just abandoned a broken umbrella and I’m a maniac making up stories for clout. But I really appreciated the fact that these images carried so much story potential. What story would you have come up with?”
