PSO Honors Concert is Feb. 7 at Zoar
Travis Jurgens, music director of the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra, has announced the participants of the Solo Honors Competition to be held February 7, at 7:30 p.m., at Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 East Indiana Avenue, Perrysburg.
The winner of the competition will receive a $500 award and an opportunity to perform their winning piece with the symphony during the orchestra’s spring concert on May 2.
The Four Contestants Are:
Will Edwards is an undergraduate student at Bowling Green State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music performance.
His major woodwind instrument is the saxophone. Will’s home base is in the far west where his family resides in Gilbert, Arizona. He is presently under the tutelage of Professor Dr. John Sampen, a well-known performing artist and teacher. Will enjoys instructing the Detroit Symphony’s Civic Youth Ensembles in the finer aspects of their musical performances.
He also is honored to be a young working faculty member in the BGSU summer saxophone camp.
His expertise on the saxophone will be demonstrated with his rendition of the 1949 solo by composer Henri Tomasi, “Concerto for Alto Saxophone.
Tumaini Sango is a classical and jazz pianist from Allendale, Michigan. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in performance at BGSU. He has previously won several piano concerto competitions in the western Michigan area.
In June 2023, Tumaini, with a group of his musical friends, released a jazz album they titled, “2755.”
He will be performing Robert Schumann’s, “Piano Concerto in A minor, Op 54 I:Allegro Affettuoso.”
Madeline Depinet is a recent graduate from BGSU where she completed her undergraduate degree in musical education as a choral major.
She is currently studying musical compositions with Dr. Sarah Leubke. Her recent vocal performances include: singing in the ensembles of Toledo Opera’s “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Celebrazione del Coro.” She is also the musical section leader for First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green. Madeline will perform Jacques Offenbach’s, “The Doll Aria from The Tales of Hoffman.”
Mathew Martin began studying piano at the age of 12 in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.
As an adult, he studied piano with Dr. Jerome Reed at Nashville’s Lipscomb University and graduated from there with summa cm laude high honors. While at Lipscomb, he placed first in the artist duo class in the 2024 Knoxville International Piano Competition.
In addition to his competition award, he was honored to participate in the community of pianists studying and performing at the Adamant Music School Festival held yearly in the Green Mountain Valley of Vermont.
Matthew is currently studying keyboard with Dr. Robert Satterlee at BGSU. His choice for this performance is Maurice Ravel’s, “Piano Concerto in G Major: Allegrament.”
