This is a session of deep introspection, a crossing without a guarantee of finding a shore, a revision of internal cartography, an audit of losses and possible finds.

We have an unexpected guest mix, and it's the best I've heard in months - not just in terms of message and energy. Firstly, it's an accurate accounting of the current state of mind and the "mode of sensibility" into which everything that was vivid and real in the so-called "Russian industrial underground" has evolved. And secondly, no matter how insistent the authors are in their reclusiveness, this mix is exactly about what Russian war deprives us of: freedom, freedom to choose and normal abnormality.

NEW ON NEN A small release by Ogneo is dedicated to huge events. The first track refers to the meeting of the Russian Federation Security Council on 21 February 2022, which resulted in Russia’s shocking militaristic coming-out. There was nothing unexpected in it to attentive observers: all the 2010s saw the growth of Russian military spending — including that on private military companies, formally banned by the laws of the Russian Federation. The second track is specifically dedicated to the activities of PMCs, and more specifically to the tragic death of the journalist group of Orkhan Dzhemal, Alexander Rastorguev and Kirill Radchenko in the Central African Republic on 30 July 2018. The journalists travelled to CAR to shoot a film about the activities of the Wagner PMC, which is linked to the so-called «Putin’s chef» Yevgeny Prigozhin. Ogneo comments on both stories in the language of post-industrial dub, not devoid of grim sarcasm.

NEN goes industrial hip hop, aye. Not electrified terror rap nor rabid noise trap. Fraught bruit-induced assemblage, ethereal-flavored bitch house, depressive vital Russian pop, (dark) ambientish examination of hardware and human entrails; this is the vibe of Olovo Ferna. It pressurizes slowly, in great maddening: a beat of urban underbelly, an elecrtic crackle of cooling lanterns, a whisper by frozen lips, a groan of rivers’ grid, sheltered under ice-stone blanket. Anonymous-intimate flow may reminds you of the trippiest genre gems, but don’t be fooled. There is less delight-dragging and bare nerve than malice and mordancy. Great for emotional exhaustion and come-down from cynism. Like the serpent of eternal return, this tape eats not only its own tail, but all your free time. Remember to close the door as you do listen. To the room, or to heart — it’s up to you. This record is best summed up by the word «hover»: and it has never been so bittersweet.
