Liz Truss is to resign as prime minister after just six weeks.

Her time in office has been dominated by market chaos prompted by the mini-budget that was announced by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last month.

Despite sacking Mr Kwarteng last week and reversing almost all the unfunded tax cuts that had been proposed, the prime minister's position had continued to come under pressure.

Queen's cause of death revealed in extract of certificate

An extract of the Queen's death certificate has been released which shows she died of old age.

The Queen's daughter Princess Anne is named as the "informant" on the document and would have notified the local registrar of her mother's death.

The document, released by National Records of Scotland, also notes Britain's longest-serving monarch died at 3.10pm on Thursday 8 September.

When paying tribute to her mother, Princess Anne revealed she was with the head of state in her last moments.

Anne, who accompanied her mother's coffin as it travelled from Balmoral to London, via Edinburgh, said: "I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest mother's life."

The Queen has died aged 96, Buckingham Palace has announced.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," Buckingham Palace said.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the world's oldest head of state.

On her death, the Queen's eldest son and heir, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, has become King of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms.

No official details have been released about what will happen over the coming days, but it is anticipated that the Queen will be given a full state funeral, as is traditional to mark the death of a monarch.

It is also expected that her body will lie in state to allow the public to pay tribute.

The King will sign off the final plans in the coming days.

Queen health fears - latest updates: Charles, William and Harry heading to Balmoral amid 'deep concern' for monarch

The Queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle, where her children and grandchildren are now gathering to be at her side.

Doctors are said to be "concerned" for her health - but she is described as being "comfortable" in her beloved Scottish holiday home.

The last 12 months have been busy for Her Majesty, who celebrated her Platinum Jubilee at the start of June.

We last saw her on Tuesday, when she met with Liz Truss at Balmoral to formally appoint her as the country's next prime minister.

Johnny Depp has won his multimillion-dollar US lawsuit against former wife Amber Heard after a Virginia jury ruled a 2018 article published in The Washington Post was defamatory.

He was awarded $15m by the court - comprising $10m compensatory damages and a further $5m in punitive damages.

Amber Heard was awarded $2m in her counter-suit against Depp.

Depp said he was "truly humbled" by the jury's verdict, saying the allegations had had a "seismic impact" on his life and career.

"From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome", he said.

"Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me.

"I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that."

Heard said she was "heartbroken" at the verdict and said it "sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated".

She added: "I'm sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American - to speak freely and openly."
