Some of my favorite moments recording are when I get to make new friends with the critters I run across on the way. I met this porcupine early one morning in central Washington state after recording wind in sagebrush before dawn. Unsure about each other at first we became buddies as we each slowly and respectfully made our way back to the road walking not quite side by side.

I loaded a sample of fireworks onto STS then into Disting EX in spectral freeze mode into Melotus Versio running Polydactyl Versio firmware for multiband compression and saturation.

My new nature sound effects library of desert oasis ambiences from Ash Meadows Nevada is now up on !

The recording sessions for this library were quite challenging as temperatures were pushing 120F (49C) while I was there, but well worthwhile as I’m quite pleased with how they turned out.

Also of note is that I’ve taken the time to identify bird and wildlife calls and added them as markers in the metadata such that when you look at the file in Soundminer or your DAW, you know what to expect and where without having to listen to the whole file.

Last month I returned to where this all started and recorded again in Death Valley. Head to Bandcamp to listen to an uninterrupted hour and 20 minutes of calm nature with no human sounds. (Link in bio)

I can hardly wait to try these new mics from ! The pair of their first gen Earsight mics that I bought from them a while back served me very well in Ash Meadows Nevada even with daytime temperatures reaching over 120F (49 C) so I’m very optimistic about this new Earsight Pro model being constructed with durability as a priority.

Note that while I’m not sponsored in any way I do feel that immersive soundscapes mics are excellent and as a plus they are built in a part of France that’s very close to my heart.

Can’t give details yet but this year is shaping up to involve some incredible field recording adventures in nature! This quad set will allow me to capture nice clean surround recordings for some very exciting projects.
