Announcement 🐘 ⭐️ 🇬🇧 WORLD PARTY TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL ALBUM DAY- GREAT BRITISH GROUPS PRESENTED BY BBC RADIO 2 - OCTOBER 19TH
TO RELEASE LIMITED EDITION OF 'GOODBYE JUMBO' ON WORLDLY COLOURED VINYL
================================================
World Party is back again, with a limited edition of Goodbye Jumbo for this year's National Album Day featuring Great British Bands promoted by BBC Radio 2. A panel of industry executives has curated the albums chosen. This year's event occurs on October 19, 2024, the day of Karl Wallinger's birth. Created for the occasion, it is a unique limited edition of 1500 180g "Worldly" colored vinyl.
Goodbye Jumbo, World Party's sophomore album, was released by Ensign Records on April 24, 1990. Q magazine awarded it "Album of the Year" and was nominated for a 1991 Grammy for "Best Alternative Music Performance." It was also voted fifteenth best album in the Village Voice's year-end Pazz and Jop Critics' Poll and was ranked #94 on Q's list of "100 Greatest British Albums Ever." An American alternative radio sensation, Goodbye Jumbo featured the singles "Way Down Now" and "Put The Message In The Box," with the former reaching #1.
There was no shortage of praise for the album; Chris Willman of the Los Angeles Times stated that Wallinger's "Lennonisms sound somehow endemic, not affected" and that the album never lapses into "petty theft" despite its numerous influences. In Rolling Stone, Don McLeese wrote that "Goodbye Jumbo displays an ambition as broad as the emotional range of its music" and that while "Wallinger's missionary zeal occasionally belabors his messages," the music is sufficiently vital to overpower resistance.
World Party's songs showcased Wallinger's love of '60s psychedelia, with traces of '80s funk-pop. Wallinger is best known for his 80s and 90s hits, "Ship of Fools," "Message in the Box," "Way Day Now," and "Is it Like Today?" Private Revolution, Bang!, Goodbye Jumbo, and Egyptology were reissued on vinyl over the past few years via his imprint, Seaview Records. Wallinger died at age 66 on March 10, 2024.
