Last week the Lower Manhattan Historical Association honored Bill Tingling for his outstanding work advancing religious freedom and tolerance with the Annual Gershom Mendes Seixas Religious Award. The ceremony was held at 85 Broad Street. It took place at the historic Mill Street Synagogue, the oldest Synagogue in America, which was consecrated in 1730.
The following Speakers were Ambrose M. Richardson, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Tammy Meltzer, Reverend Zachary Edinger, Rabbi Nissi Eber, Jack Kliger James S. Kaplan & Caroline Kaplan who read the letter from George Washington that was sent to the Hebrew Congregation from 1790.
This event was also for the 293rd Anniversary of the Consecration of the first Synagogue in North America. The Mill Street Synagogue, located on what is today the corner of South William Street & Mill Lane in Lower Manhattan.
