โAll right, guys. Weโre need to air this place out.โ
โNot until you air your dirty laundry,โ her teen daughter replied with a grin. For once, the girl wasnโt staring at her phone. Not that it brought a lot of relief to Rebecca since she was staring at her instead. โWho was that firefighter?โ
โYou heard him say his name is Dean,โ Rebecca grumbled as she fought with the lock on one of the windows.
โBut who ๐๐ he?โ Madison pressed. โIโve never seen you stand there like a deer in headlights when youโve talked to anyone else.โ
Good god, was it that obvious? Was that why Dean had looked so amused? Running into him like that shouldnโt have been different from bumping into anyone else from high school, especially after nearly thirty years. โJust an old friend.โ
โLike a friend with benefits?โ
โMadison!โ Rebecca whirled on her daughter, pulling her eyebrows down to look as fierce and angry as possible even though she was laughing inside. Somewhere in her mind, her little girl was still only five years old, and she shouldnโt know such things. โDonโt say that!โ
โHey, Iโm just picking up the vibe youโre laying down,โ her daughter reasoned as she leaned against the front counter.
โWhat you should be picking up is this store,โ Rebecca retorted.
โYou have to admit he looked pretty sexy in his uniform,โ Claire offered, her gray eyebrows waggling.
โMom!โ Rebeccaโs cheeks burned, but her mother was right. Time had done a few favors for Dean, and his wide shoulders seemed to easily hold up the heavy firefighting gear.
Claire put her chin in the air. โIโm no spring chicken, but it doesnโt mean Iโm blind. Are you going to tell me you didnโt notice, Rebecca?โ
Rebecca puffed up her cheeks and blew the air out through pursed lips. Yeah, sheโd noticed. Sheโd absolutely noticed, but she wished no one else had. โI see how it is. I pick up my whole life to move back home and help you guys out, and youโre just going to be sassy with me.โ
โHe always was a nice young man,โ her father said as he passed by.
Rebecca didnโt bother responding. She knew exactly what that comment meant, even if it was only a few words. They thought the world of Dean. They always had. He was a member of their clan. But it didnโt mean a single thing to her. Sheโd left that damn bear shifter and any interest in him behind a long time ago.
She was forty-six now. Just because she was back in Carlton didnโt mean she had to pick up her old life where she left off.
But holy hell. Dean could damn near set her on fire with that smolder of his. Sheโd obviously imagined what it might be like to see him around town. There would be a cordial exchange of pleasantries, and then sheโd do her absolute best to avoid ever seeing him again. Now she had a text from him, just waiting in her pocket. Rebecca pulled it out, not wanting to leave that notification hovering over her head.
She selected the message and held her finger over the trash can icon. If she deleted his number, she had an excuse for not calling him.
But something made her hit the home button and leave the textโand his phone numberโright where they were.
