On Saturday's Roots & Wings, we'll continue to honor the legacy of our dear friend, Sonya Cohen Cramer. I'll start off with 3 songs from 1965, the year Sonya was born. I'll play Roscoe Holcomb (who held newborn Sonya in his arms backstage at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival), Uncle Pete Seeger from a live 1965 concert at Carnegie Hall, and Bob Dylan as he went live at that infamous 1965 Newport Folk Festival. We'll then hear 3 tracks from the forthcoming record, Sonya Cohen Cramer: You've Been A Friend to Me (Smithsonian Folkways 2024). This album will be officially released in May and you can pre-order NOW from Smithsonian. However, if you tune into Roots & Wings on Saturday night, you'll hear 3 tracks here before you'll hear them anywhere else! BOB BOILEN IS WOWD's NEW PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The creator of NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts and All Songs Considered, Boilen also directed All Things Considered for 18 years. Boilen is the host of My Tiny Morning Show, a one-hour program on Wednesdays at 8AM featuring new emerging creative, independent artists and groundbreaking artists from the past.

Boilen grew up in New York and moved to the Washington DC area as a teenager. He is a musician, formerly of Tiny Desk Unit who were the first to play 9:30 Club. He currently performs and records with his band Danger Painters, solo ambient projects, and the improv bands Fanoplane and Tight Socks. Boilen is author of the book Your Song Changed My Life, in which he asked 35 artists - including Jimmy Page, David Byrne, Lucinda Williams, Ian MacKaye, and Smokey Robinson - about a song that changed their lives.

“After 35 years at NPR, it’s a thrill to be a part of community radio with a spirit of commitment and imagination that this station and its volunteers offer,” Boilen said.

On June 1, Boilen will succeed Steve Hoffman as Program Director. "Being WOWD’s Program Director these past six and a half years has been an honor and a thrill," said Steve. "This job was the culmination of my lifelong love affair with radio and my five decades DJing on community radio." WOWD thanks Steve and wishes him all the best in his retirement. Listeners can still hear him every Tuesday at 8AM EST on Tuesday Morning Mix.

Tune in on Saturday for a special two-hour tribute to Dex Romweber who died last week at the age of 57. Dex may be best known for his work with the Flat Duo Jets, but his musical legacy is lifelong and expansive. A true ROOTS and WINGS experience. Becky will spend the first portion of the program playing music which influenced Dex during his youth and share stories of their teenage friendship. During the second portion of the program, she'll play music from Dex's various musical projects: Flat Duo Jets, Dex Romweber Duo, Dexter Romweber and the New Romans, and Dex Romweber solo work.
