Meanwhile, Somewhere in the Mediterranean…

This week has been…a hustle. I told myself I’d be better at posting more regularly. Keep up the motivation, form the good habits.

I selected this photo today, at the end of this week, because it instantly took me back to this moment on the sea. Just looking out ahead, at the sun piercing the water, and taking deep breaths. Smelling the salt. Feeling the spray. Hearing the break of the waves beneath.

Travel into this photo if you need that in your life right now.

Sunset in Neos Kosmos

We stayed a few nights at a rented flat in Athens at the end of our trip through the Mediterranean Sea. This was shortly after we checked in and got settled after a full day of walking and exploring. I needed a few minutes to relax and collect, so I stepped out onto the balcony and took in this view of the neighborhood, listening to the sounds. And the sounds! Always something going on. It wasn’t quiet again until a few mornings later when we were standing on the street below at 04:00 waiting for our ride to the airport.

Athens is a very different world than the one I know. It reminded me the value of pushing the boundaries of my own comfort…and just taking it all in.

The Caryatids of Erechtheion

I’m bringing these six legendary women to Monday today! The level of detail that’s managed to be preserved throughout the millennia on these caryatids was mind bending (constructed 421-405 BCE), and I’m so gratified by how well a monochrome edit really expresses that. While the Parthenon was extraordinary to behold in person, I couldn’t stop looking over at the “Porch of the Maidens”. It was heart-stopping.

Lycabettus Hill Over Athens

I really enjoyed this view of Athens taken from the Acropolis. I loved that hill in the distance, and I wanted to visit it for a different view of the Acropolis but we didn’t have time to make that happen. After we got home, I looked it up and that’s Λυκαβηττός (Lycabettus Hill). And yeah, we would have had one hell of a view, but I’d have needed some pretty heavy glass. As it was, I didn’t have my X-T3 on this trip, just my phone. So it is!

Also: This is an opener for my Monochrome Monday post tomorrow. Stay tuned! 😉

Where Sand, Ocean, and the Heavens Meet

This is an older shot I shared on IG back in early 2019. But it's one of my favorites of all time and I just realized I never posted it here.

Sometimes the post is just about a good memory, not a sizzler for the portfolio. Kayaking a quiet lake yesterday with my love, Tierany Seriflame, was a choice way to ring in my 40th Solar Return. This is…the best life.

Today, on my actual birthday, we’re planning a road trip to Deception Pass, so I’m hoping to get some great shots to share.

Getting these two shots was an interesting experience given the lighting. Have a look: the first shot is looking south down First Beach, the early morning sun shining bright against the waves, with some darker clouds out at sea but blue open sky further south. The second shot rotates the Mavic about 180º looking north to James Island, where sheets of rain can be seen drenching the rocks, but that bright morning sun behind me burning through to the beach and throwing that double rainbow (the outer rings are cropped out of this one). It was dark, it was bright; it was drab, it was popping... The second shot is actually a 5-exposure bracketed HDR just to make sense of the range I needed.

Aerial work is still not my forté, but I enjoyed these.

I thank the Quileute Tribe for the opportunity to capture these photos of their sacred land.

Moss & Mist at the Farm in Saksun

This farm, Dúvugarðar in Saksun, was like glimpsing an existence on a plane between worlds. Everything was simultaneously hyperreal and surreal. I was walking through a dream that never faded when I woke up.

Neon in Portland Union Station

The majority of the work I share is nature-based or inspired. But I've been wanting to experiment with urban and architecture work more. I've been also wanting to play with neon and artificial light. So this shot I quickly snapped off inside Union Station in Portland, OR (and I mean QUICK; security was not a fan of my ) presented a fun opportunity to practice.

I can do better with this type of shot or genre. But it's all practice. And I'm deciding to share that practice rather than sharing only the shots I -think- anyone else will think is a banger.

Look, I never know what to say with these things. It’s a beautiful photo, and I have beautiful memories, with a beautiful person there (*ahem* Tierany Seriflame *ahem*). But I don’t have a story to tell here. So instead, here’s my astrology today, and it slaps. It’s been on my mind.

An impulsive decision has affected things you know and are familiar with. You will notice frictionless movement in the way you articulate yourself. Feel out the limits of how you're thinking. You already knew: the secret is to really begin.

This acceleration will see its beginnings in deep truths relating to the way you make sense of the world. A surprising event will quickly change monumental changes that have affected the way you perceive the world, or how you've been thinking about change.

This situation will move incredibly quickly. Be ready. — costarastrology.com

Church of Sainte-Marie-du-Bourg at dusk.

I was fortunate enough to get this shot at dusk right after I got off the ship. I would have loved to have been there a little earlier for golden hour. We were docked in Rhodes the entire next day as well, unfortunately I got hit with a nasty gut bug that kept me aboard ship the entire day.

Shot on iPhone 13 Pro Max in raw mode, edited in Lightroom.

Gnarled Wood at Baker Lake.

This is a shot from nearly two years ago at the end of August during a camping trip for my birthday. The lake was so serene, the mountains a perfect place to nestle in and recharge.

A bit of admin: I haven't been the biggest fan of the way Instagram auto-shares to this page. Specifically how my carousel slices appear as separate images. It just looks confusing and lazy to me. So I'm experimenting with just doing the post here separately with a higher-quality image than the ones I use on IG. I hope this works better.

Fire in the Sky at Lake Crescent. I always have to stop to touch the icy water and take a few photos. As gorgeous as the lake always is, I'm always there on days with grey, boring sky. But editing gets the look to match the feel.

My last personal laptop was my 2014 MacBook Air, obsolete from Apple for a while now. It couldn't handle any of my editing apps. But I'm rocking the M2 MacBook Air now, getting back into things. I'm rusty!

One of my new (to me) tools is Luminar AI. Haven't really gotten to use it at all. I've been having fun with that. Does amazing things with skies, and I originally tried that here. But...I guess there's something to be said about getting a dramatic sky on my own.
