After a long battle with cancer, Bill’s wife Beni Johnson, went to be with Jesus on July 13, 2022. My wife Lynette Tabatt endured a 19-month battle with cancer and went to be with Jesus on March 17, 2024. They are both now fully alive and free.

In this conversation, Bill and I discuss some of the things we’ve learned along the way as we’ve respectively walked with God to recover and rebuild our lives following one of the most difficult grief journeys a man can face.

August 10, 2022, started out like any other work day. I got up early and was up in the loft of our shed doing book and podcast-related stuff, when all of a sudden Theo ran upstairs and told me, "There is something wrong with Mom!"

I rushed into the house to discover Lynette having a seizure in our bedroom. We would soon come to find out that she had a brain tumor and a life expectancy of one year. She bravely endured four brain surgeries, spending a total of sixty days in the hospital that year, not to mention the countless other chemo and radiation-related appointments.

As I acknowledge this second anniversary, Lynette has been healed and whole in Heaven for nearly five months. While I wish this sort of journey on no man, I continue to be thankful for how it has transformed me into a better person and drawn me closer to God through paths that are only navigable amid horrendous pain.

I've had some opportunities to interact with other men who've lost their dear one to cancer, which has helped me to see that I'm not alone in how I experienced loss and grief along this entire journey. The funny dynamic to all of this is while the world grieves when your spouse experiences physical death, you begin grieving right from the start, from that first moment on that first day.

In so many ways, everything normal about Lynette's and my married life died that day, followed by a slow saying goodbye to more and more as the cancer insidiously steals your person away.

In my experience transitioning all of a sudden from husband to full-time caregiver / nurse was both one of the biggest privileges of my life, but also one of the most soul-crushing at the same time. In those circumstances, you're walking out life in the midst of such an odd tension. On the one hand you are married to and love your spouse, but at the same time you feel like you're single and alone due to all of the normal and beautiful parts of your day-to-day life as a couple being taken away. In a covenantal sense, next week I will have been single/widowed now for 5 months. In so many ways in my heart and mind it feels like I've been single for two whole years.

I know some people have been offended when I've tried to express this aspect of my journey in past posts. I'm not here to offend, I'm simply sharing from what I've felt and experienced. Again as I've talked with other men who've walked this same road of losing their dear one, they've expressed to me that they've had a similar experience.

As I remember today how this unexpected detour in life began, I am incredibly thankful. I'm thankful for Jesus holding me close and keeping me sane these past two years. I'm thankful for the innumerable friends and family who have supported us in every way imaginable. I'm thankful that God is a God of new beginnings, capable of rebuilding something beautiful and wonderful amid dust, ashes, and rubble.

While Lynette will always have a prominent place in my heart and there isn't a day that I don't miss her, my gaze is fixed on the road ahead. In my daily prayer time, God has been very specific with me about what it is going to look like as He restores everything that the enemy has stolen from our family. You can expect to see a physical move in the not too distant future. Know that I intend to get remarried as soon as God gives me a green light with the right person. Even if you don't agree with some of the timelines within which these things might happen, simply pray for us and rejoice that God is restoring the joy of our family.
