As promised, views of the always-captivating windows at -- and a few shots across the street to , which is what everyone is buzzing about this year, though my heart says 'meh,' I do appreciate the craftsmanship and those silver edges. While I try to snap, snap, snap, ever so unobtrusively, the reflections distract me and I keep repositioning myself and try to do better. Later it occurs to me that the reflections must be factored in by the artists from the start -- and sometimes the best part of the images that result. I do believe the window artists at Bergdorf's know this better than everyone else. It seemed to me they were on a tight budget this year (like me), re-using props from years gone by, which made me appreciate their brilliant imaginations all the more.

The perfect ending to a day of NYC Christmas magic...I stepped off the train back home in the Hudson Valley as a light snow began to fall. Sometimes the Universe times things just right.

2. My friend 's infamous Ugly Santa collection, which she started back in our Country Living days with the furry Belsnickel on the lower right, better known as "rat Santa" ... she rescued the most authentically scary of them from the land of giveaway props

3-6 Second Tier at Carnegie Hall, where the young man at the front door asked me if I wanted to take the elevator, which made me wonder if I was looking haggard, but the man at the stairs told me I looked a little "like Meryl Streep around here," pointing to his eyes with a Batman dance manuever, which made me laugh out loud and gave me my confidence back (even though she's older than me)...Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Isata Kanneh-Mason's beautiful rendition of "In the Bleak Midwinter" made my eyes well up a little at encore time, I must admit...I heard poet Christina Rossetti's words in my head...

8 One of a pair of fabulous giant urns on 57th Street, filled with evergreen boughs, of course

9-13 Central Park, all silver-gray and gold with little pops of red and green and lots and lots and lots of people--groups of friends and families in NYC knit caps and earmuffs (some with crying babies who are destined to become future opera stars)

14 That's a wrap for now (in a Tiffany's box). Will post Bergdorf's and the churches separately anon. Happy Monday, everyone.

"Reawakening Wonder"--a 17-story-tall mural by artist Michael Rice --brings glimmers light to the facade of a midcentury hotel-turned-apartment building on the northern edge of Downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Completed in the summer of 2023, the work is a bright spot along an elevated stretch of Interstate 91 that dates to a period in US history when we were keen to bulldoze entire neighborhoods in established communities for the sake of faster car travel...with notoriously disappointing results. ✨ Today, artists and forward-thinking real estate developers around the country are working together to re-imagine our cities and downtowns as beautiful places for people to live, work, and play in again ✨ not just as convenient highways for cars and delivery trucks to speed through on the way back and forth from somewhere else. That's a beautiful thing to see.

I bought the little oil painting, along w a couple of prints by the same artist, at a local flea market a couple of decades ago. The subject has always struck me as sort of 1940s noir, a little androgynous, Joan Crawford-ish. The artist, Wayne Weatherly, is clearly talented, but I have not been able to find a lot of background in him. One of the fun things about this particular portrait is the sketch in the back: Elsie the Cow? Elmer the Bull? But an intriguing contrast to the serious/thoughtful pose on the other side.

The from various perspectives today, with and without its "party hat," as architect Hugh Hardy (and others) called them. Looking at the skyline from NJ today, I have to admit I miss those 🎉🥳 . From a distance so many of our 21st-century buildings look like industrial smokestacks, not homes or centers of commerce. But that is OG me, always looking for beauty.

There are cons to living in a "tourist town," but, for now at least, the pros far outweigh them. I hope today's visitors had a fun day, left things as they found them, and could see the rising moon from the train back home. 🌕

Let me tell you what I wish I'd known
When I was young and dreamed of glory:
You have no control:
Who lives, who dies, who tells your story

I know that we can win
I know that greatness lies in you
But remember from here on in

History has its
Eyes on you.

--The character of George Washington to the young Alexander Hamilton, the words of , from , which my (all female) family and I went to see at the weekend before last...two weekends before the general election. There are lessons to be learned in every disappointment.

I hope one day to live in a truly united country, whose actions reflect the values articulated in our pledge of allegiance. I'm pretty sick of that same old act. Curtain rise on something better, with more women at center stage please. Meantime, we must not stop telling our stories.

Farewell October. You were gorgeous. See you next year, God willing (as my grandmother always used to tag on, lest we get too presumptuous about our time here on planet Earth...a reminder to appreciate this day and do as much as we can, while we can, for and with the people we care about).

Wild Thing of the Week: The ripe berries of the much reviled (and poisonous to humans and their pets) pokeweed (Phytolacca americana). Historians say the plant was used to make ink and dyes as well as home remedies...but definitely do NOT try this at home. Horticultural vinegar supposedly kills the root, but I'll have to report back to you on that hard-to-believe theory. I once naively used these berries in a bunch of mixed bouquets I made for a event. :) The decorations were a big hit and I survived, but I've since just admired them from afar. You've gotta admit, they are pretty fantastic looking and a psychedelic-trip sorta way.
