Wild Thing of the Week: The early birds this morning were the crows. One way you can tell the difference between crows and ravens--other than by their size (ravens are larger) and call (crows have a distinctive "caw-caw"), is by the shape of their tails. The tail of the American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), shown in Image 1 (I think!!) fans out in a straight line, while the raven's tail comes to a point. They both have ten long, fingerlike "flight feathers" on their wings (which does draw our minds to the theory of evolution...👋....but I won't get into that this week of all weeks). Crows and ravens are such strong and smart creatures. All respect to the birds and other stalwart creatures out and about at 6 am this wintry morning in the Hudson Valley. (Those are coyote or fox prints in the snow, btw...not 100% sure about them, either...I've seen both in my backyard. Either way, the squirrels, voles, etc., better watch out.)
