From our columnist Steve Reider, Buy a book!
I writing this to tell you what I think would be the best birthday present I could ever ask for. Yeah, thats right, it is coming up in a couple of days and I am not writing this to solicit birthday wishes and that is the honest truth! But, the reason I am writing this however, is my wife, my friends, and others always ask what do you want for your birthday around this time of year.
Well I have been giving it some thought the last couple of days and I have came to the conclusion that the best present, I could ask for is the hopes that folks will buy one of my books. I know what your thinking... No, no, no, not because of the royalties I make (believe me very few people get rich wrting books...very few, and I won't be one of them. Trust me just become an author and you will see), but because of what the books have to offer.
Three books that offer a lot of insights and philospihies of dog training, (from basic obedience, bird dog training), short stories, that will make make you laugh and cry and a book that will keep you smiling and laughing, (a lot of laughter). Stories about how I came up with the concepts I use at Dogs of the Feather and what I have learned through the clients who have trained with me, at my facility and their dogs, who I have the pleasure of training.
Just knowing that I contributed to society in a small way would be one heck of a birthday gift. Sharing my thoughts, my wisdom, my dreams and my hopes. That would be one heck of a birthday gift. I owe a lot to a lot of people, but know more than to my wife, my family and my God. He is the one who gave me the, hands, put the ink in my pen and helped me put words to paper.
I can personally say that out of all the clients and dogs that came through Dogs of the Feather, I haven't had one complaint... not one! There are some outstanding people in the dog world. Clients, business associates, other trainers, friends, just plain good folks, and yes D-O-G-S-! Without them all of this would be rubbish. And with that said, I'll leave you with one of the best quotes I ever heard from a man's man, whom I admire very much! "I NEVER LOOK AT THINGS AS PROBLEMS, I LOOK AT THEM AS OPPORTUNITIES."
