Grasping political power, evangelical Christians pay a steep price.

U.S. presidential campaigns display the tension between faith-based conservative and progressive movements. Opposing political messages appeal to different religious impulses: inclusion or exclusion, mercy or judgment, restoring past greatness or seeking future justice.

"‘More-with-Less’ was my first taste — literally — of being Mennonite" - Karla Morton

While attending Northern Arizona University, my three housemates and I shared meals using recipes from the More-with-Less cookbook by Doris Janzen Longacre. I had no idea who Mennonites were.

Carlos Whittaker spent seven weeks screen-free. His idea of God changed.

It all started when Carlos Whittaker received that perky Sunday morning iPhone notification summarizing his time spent on his handheld screen in the past week. Seven hours and twenty-three minutes on average per day. Whittaker, an author and former worship pastor, did some quick math and realized th...

Swartzentruber sect refuses flashing lights on buggies but won’t take the matter to court. For lawyers and students at Harvard, it’s a valid religious-freedom case.

In bodycam footage from an April 2023 traffic stop in rural Ohio, an unseen law enforcement officer approaches a spartan black buggy, typical of vehicles used by the Swartzentruber Amish, and asks the two young men inside if they’ve ever received a ticket. “I think I’m going to tow your buggy,...

Are you part of a small church? How do you know it’s small? If it used to be bigger, how have you adjusted? Is it possible to do more with less?

The Holy Welcome of this bar is indeed for all: for those inside its unique culture and for the rest of us looking for a place to feel accepted and loved as we are, no strings attached. Wouldn’t it be beautiful if the church did the same?

On Sunday afternoons, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. or so, I’ve (Alisha) found myself in an unexpected place: singing karaoke at a local dive bar. The floors are sticky, the drinks are cheap and the lights are dim — the perfect place to remain anonymous. And yet, when the darkness is pierced by the …

Food exists at a lot of intersections. Traditional food can help us connect with our culture across the globe and across time. Food at a block party can help us connect with our neighbors across the street. Food nourishes our bodies for healthy functioning. Food can bring us joy adding decadence to a celebration. That's a lot.

"With the school year starting this week (in central Kansas at least) and the new Sunday school year starting in a couple of weeks — faith formation and growth is on my mind. At a time of new beginnings, it’s a good time to think about what intentional choices I can make to help my daughter grow in faith as I seek to walk more closely with God."

Since the beginning of Israel’s war in Gaza, Arab Christians in the Middle East have complained that Western Christians, particularly White evangelicals, have exhibited a lack of compassion for the Palestinians, more than 40,000 of whom have died since Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7.

Arab Christians can no longer be silent about their co-religionists’ solidarity with what is at best an act of revenge and at worst a genocide.

Many people think that certain words can now only be defined by extremes and that these definitions will always only benefit some and isolate others. However, there are far more nuances to concepts and definitions than two polarizing extremist interpretations.

I recently got into a heated argument with a relative. At the mere mention of privilege, they exploded at me. In our heavily polarized world, the media cycles, attention-hungry politicians and social media influencers would have you believe that words like “privilege” can no longer be brought to...
