Prunus cerasifera - Cherry Plum
Happy solstice all. Time to drawn down the troughs and to know the half way point.
December flowering Galanthus plicatus ‘Three Ships’. Always welcome.
The calamagrostis and the Ferula will hold their own all winter. Already proving their worth in their skeletons.
First frost caught in the garden this morning. The Molinia Transparent’ at their autumnal best.
Last colour and soon to be bare branches. As wet as our ground can be. All bulbs in. Beginning of the planting season. Bare root roses already here, new apple trees n their way.
Yesterday the sun shone and lit the Deschampsia caespitosa that margins the pond. The grassy component in the wetland mix from Emorsgate Seeds was direct sown just two years ago to heal the scars after digging the pond.
Wren mongst the Tricyrtis formosana. The toad lilies were planted around a Clerodendron which was supposed to provide them their shade but the Cleodendrim has been tardy. Hit twice by freeze, it is finally getting away. The shade loving Toad lilies meanwhile have been just fine in their wait for favoured conditions. So good for now. A month of late flower.
The annual Moon Carrot, Ami visnaga for the full moon which was yesterday. Sown in plugs in March and planted directly into the sand of the sand garden as a ‘filler’ whilst the perennials for the furore fill out. We will collect seed when it is ripe and repeat the process because the sand garden would now feel missing without them.
Nerine bowdenij moment marking the autumn in full swing. Grow them hard with plenty of opportunity to bask in sun and they will repay you without a complaint.
The Prunus x yedoensis colouring and having its second season. There were no trees when we came to Hillside and to plant a pink cherry on the slopes was a hard decision. It being the best and having seen them arching wide and gracefully in Japan, we can now see the decision was worth it.
A cracking visit as usual from @michaelmccoyongardens and his band of super interested, curious and intelligent garden visitors. We had a great afternoon and were very happy that they did too.
Johns new chippe and pollarding the willows sent me made into eco piles, this lot bark chip once it’s composted.
