EDIT: Folks, it's okay to have good-faith discussions about this without immediately going nuclear. We're surrounded by actual, meaningfully divisive racist chuds who sit around all day waiting for any opportunity to try to try to get a rise out of someone (to fill the void in their lives created by them being terrible humans), so let's not get too far off the tracks torpedoing folks who are like "that's cool but I see it more this way." This resonates with me so much. I'm still waiting on a professional diagnosis. The reasons I haven't gotten one yet : Most of the doctors I've dealt with aren't super familiar or knowledgeable about Ehler's Danlos Syndrome, apparently genetic testing can only be done for *very serious medical purposes*, no one in my family has a professional diagnosis , there's "no benefit" to getting diagnosed, because there aren't any solid treatment plans. No one in my family is diagnosed, because they'd have to jump through these hoops and have some cross reference genes to compare to from another family member. It's a weird, encompassing circle with no starting point. You need A to get B, but to get A you have to already have B. It's frustrating. I was told a rheumatologist can make the diagnosis, or a geneticist. I might be able to get a referral for a rheumatologist because of my osteo, but the wait list is likely to be very, very long. The benefits of being diagnosed: It'll be in my medical chart. This means notes for the anesthesiologists if I ever need surgery, since people with EDS tend to need a heavier sedation to stay under, since metabolism is faster than average. This means keeping note that I'm prone to excessive bleeding , and being mindful to have packing and stitches on standby just in case, because people with EDS have issues with wound closure due to faulty connective tissues. This means a note on my medical file for physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments, so that my joints don't just slip right back to their dislocated positions, since people with EDS have really stretchy cartilage and don't make stable collagen for their joints. This means a note on my file for many, many specialists to see, so that my care can be adjusted to better help and prevent further damages. This means medical coverage for things like mobility aids, supportive braces, custom fitted ring splints, orthopedic shoes, certain types of therapies, and so much more. I w
