The four part web series was directed by Chicago documentarian Brian Ashby, co-produced with The Stepney Family & IARC, and released via Wax Poetics. Episode One shed light on Stepney at work in his basement studio on the Southside of Chicago, Episode Two highlighted the circumstances around Stepney’s death in 1976, and Episode Three looked at the entanglement of Stepney’s rights and royalties that his family has inherited and struggled with for decades. The fourth and final episode “A Rotary Connection” documents the formulation of Rotary Connection 222 - a new large ensemble (led by IARC artist Junius Paul, with creative direction from the Stepney Sisters) that performed the music of Charles Stepney across multiple events in Chicago. The event series, which was lovingly dubbed the “Summer of Stepney,” ran concurrently with our album campaign for Step on Step, and culminated with an epic performance by Rotary Connection 222 on the grand stage of Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion in Downtown Chicago. You can watch it via the link in our bio today. And either way, we recommend carving out a few minutes to celebrate, honor, and listen to some music made by Charles Stepney today. You could honestly probably achieve this by simply turning on your radio for 10 minutes and dialing it to your local Solid Gold Hits station... out today: Asher Gamedze - Another Side with Another Time Ensemble https://international-anthem.lnk.to/AnotherSidewithAnotherTimeEnsemble In December of 2020, Cape Town, South Africa-based drummer Asher Gamedze traveled to Cairo, Egypt, where he would assemble a quintet with some of the city's finest improvisers: Maurice Louca (Elephantine, Northern Spy Recs) on synthesizers, Adham Zidan (The Invisible Hands, Baskot Lel Baltageyya) on bass, Chérif El-Masri (Eskenderella, Dimension Machine) on guitar, and Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls, Sublime Frequencies) on alto saxophone. Set up on a rooftop in a historic part of the city, the group played free through some of Gamedze's recently composed tunes (all of which would end up on his 2023 LP Turbulence and Pulse) and under the guiding principles of his improvisational, philosophical, revolutionary ethos – "to give sound to the idea that another time is possible." The session was filmed (c/o producer Maged Nader, released via Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center), and several pieces were included as LP & CD exclusive bonus tracks on Turbulence and Pulse. As of today, for the first time, those tracks – "Melancholia," "If It Rains. To Pursue Truth," and "Out Stepped Zim," are available for your streaming and/or downloading enjoyment across all digital music platforms, worldwide, as a digital EP titled Another Side with Another Time Ensemble. On June 29th, 2023, @JeremiahChiu walked into the @VintageSynthMuseum (VSM) in Highland Park, Los Angeles, with no plan more specific than “let’s fire this stuff up and see what happens.” After just two days of tracking and two days of editing, Chiu emerged with IN ELECTRIC TIME, an album of intuitive organic electronic music released by IARC on September 29th, 2023. One of the things Chiu decided to do on day 1 of the sessions was deconstruct and recreate a version of The Ghostwriters’ 1986 tune “Rococo Rondo.” This short film by @daBurkie gives a candid glimpse into that session, where Chiu (alongside VSM founder Lance Hill and engineer @BenLumsdaine) listens, deciphers, and goes into a deep gear zone to program “Rococco Rondo” for performance on the museum/studio’s extensive collection of vintage synths. He heads to São Paulo, Brazil for Sesc Pompeia next week, then to Melbourne, Australia for The Eighty Six the week after that, then to Johannesburg, South Africa for The Dig w/ our Mushroom Hour Half Hour fam the week after that... And from there he heads up to Europe for a run of shows across November, including a mondo performance with the London Contemporary Orchestra at Barbican Centre for London Jazz Festival, and more... In December he's back in North America for a 12/1 performance at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, immediately followed by a short run of shows in Mexico. Phew!
